Exam season and typing up loose ends of assignments? Hair pulling, stress crying and emotional eating? Yep, fear not we all have been there, myself included. Today’s what I ate Thursday included 2 kinder Buenos and 3 lattes, sorry not sorry! When preparing for exams or end of year assignments, we sometimes tend to neglect our mind, and being the hippy writer that I am, let’s all discuss mediation. Now, let’s not freak out, I am not talking about performing lotus position in front of the Henry Grattan building. Meditation can be taking time out of your busy day and having some time dedicated to you and you only, the rewards are endless.
Find A Space where you can be alone:
I wouldn’t recommend meditating in the DCU canteen, although I would recommend their omelettes- amazing! Find a space where you can be alone and not disturbed. It can be your room, or even the beach, I love the idea of relaxing to the sound of the waves. Anywhere you feel most comfortable. Just bring yourself and leave your troubles at the door before you enter your zone!
Breathing:
Remember when mediating to breathe in through the nose and exhale out your mouth. Forget about the past and the future, just focus and the present and your breathing. All your worries and stress will soon begin to melt away.
Close your eyes and release all tension in your body:
Sitting at a desk all day not only gives you a sore back but very bad posture. Lie down or even sit with a cushion propped behind your back. Wriggle your toes and move your shoulders around in circles before you begin. Release all that bad tension and relax your body. When you feel comfortable close your eyes.
Music or no music:
Sometimes when we had a stressful busy day, all we want is silence. The choice is of course optional. I for one love the sounds of the waves, my favourite app is Relaxation Remedies, it is an app dedicated to mediation, sounds ranging from camp fire, rain on house even sounds of the city. Whatever tickles your fancy! It also has great mediation videos for beginners. I just love it. I feel that sounds help relax me more and feel extra comfortable in my little space.
Pass your thoughts without judgement and take your time:
Whatever you may be feeling, let it pass don’t dwell on it. Just keep focusing on you and your breathing. Within minutes you will find yourself relaxed and calm. Give yourself time to adjust. Your mind is so busy with thoughts and remembering study facts that it will take some time to wind down.
There are many ways of relaxation but remember to take breaks throughout your studying whether it be mediation, exercise or even watching some Made In Chelsea, make sure you dedicate time to yourself.
Wishing you all the best in your upcoming exams and final assignments.
Take Care,
Niamh
