Now that October is right around the corner, fall is officially underway. The time has come to pack away our shorts and flip flops and to say goodbye to the warm summer sunshine. Though some of us may still be mourning the end of summer, don’t fret – there’s a lot to look forward to this coming season.
Fall can hold different meanings for all who experience it. Maybe it’s the crackling fires, the rainbow leaves, and the distinctly crisp smell of the autumn air. Or it could be Patriots and Bruins games. There’s pumpkin everything, scarves and sweaters, and winter is right around the corner.
Whether you’ve lived in Boston your whole life or you’re new to the neighborhood, we’re all going to experience the shift in season. Along with this shift comes a lot of events – annual, ongoing, traditional, and new. Here are some events you should look out for this October:
1. During the week of September 25th-October 4th, stop by ArtWeek Boston. Experience visual and performing arts and hands-on activities at various events and locations throughout the week.
2. From September 27th-October 3rd, make sure to check out Boston Fashion Week! Between fashion shows, art showcases, and parties, you won’t run out of events to go to. And don’t forget to attend the HerCampus Fashion Show on October 3rd, featuring student models from various universities in the area, dance teams, acapella groups, and so much more!
3. If you like to drink beer and are envious of all the Oktoberfest pictures taking over your Instagram feed, make sure you attend Harpoon Brewery’s Harpoon Octoberfest on October 2nd-3rd. Take advantage of all the beer, bratwurst, chicken dancing, and music!
4. This Columbus Day (October 12th), head over to the North End for the annual Columbus Day Parade. Celebrate with marching bands, performers, duck boat floats, military units, and more in Boston’s “Little Italy.”
5. On October 17th-18th, make your way over to the Charles River to watch the annual Head of the Charles Regatta. 10,000 elite rowers come to Boston for the biggest 2-day rowing race in the world. Between the nail-biting races on the river and the beautiful fall foliage, you definitely won’t want to miss this event.
6. No one knows how to do Halloween like Salem. It’s worth venturing outside the city and into the historic City of Witches to check out the costumes, parties, and of course, haunted houses. Try Chambers of Terror or the 4-D Haunted House at Salem Time Machine.

In addition to these annual events, Boston has tons of ongoing markets, sports games, concerts and more:
7. If you haven’t been yet, make your way over to South Boston’s SoWa Open Market. Every Sunday from May-October, vendors from all over come together to create this epic market that includes an open market, a farmers market, a vintage market, and countless food trucks.
8. If you’re a music fan, look at Ticketmaster’s October schedule to see if any of your favorite artists are coming into town.
