March Madness usually refers to the hype of the NCAA tournament; but this year it could also be used to describe the excitement surrounding the worldwide phenomenon The Hunger Games.

The much-anticipated book turned film, released March 23, follows heroine Katniss Everdeen as she fights for her life in a televised game that pits 24 kids aged 12-18 against one another in a survival of the fittest. The contest, known as The Hunger Games, is put on television for the entertainment of the all-powerful Capitol.

The Capitol is known for its lavish buildings, rich food, and overall excess.  But most of all, it is known for over-the-top fashion.  The eccentric looks seen at The Capitol include everything from rainbow-hued hair, makeup and skin, to cat whiskers implanted into faces of citizens.

Apart from the more permanent fashion statements are the crazy outfits worn throughout the posh Capitol.  And although the fashions of The Capitol appear to be fantastic, it seems that Hollywood has taken the essence of Capitol fashion from The Hunger Games’ pages to real life.

Elizabeth Banks (pictured as Effie Trinket, District 12 handler) epitomizes the outlandish outfits, hair colors and makeup seen at The Capitol.

Ever since Lady Gaga hit the scene, the starlets of Hollywood have tried to keep up with her out-there fashion.  Were Lady Gaga and the rest of the L.A. crowd inspirations for Suzanne Collins’ mindless Capitol dwellers?

Stars like Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj push the envelope with their style on a daily basis, much like the fashionistas in The Hunger Games. It is easy to imagine these outfits roaming the streets of The Capitol, but is there a connection? I’ll let you be the judge.

Here are some examples:

Lady Gaga is the mother monster of weird when it comes to fashion, and I have a feeling she would be given the “most fashionable” superlative in The Capitol. From her infamous meat dress, to her red carpet entrance as an egg, Lady Gaga is always at the front of the fashion curve, living up to her “Gaga” name.

Rihanna is a little more reserved (in comparison to the others) when it comes to her red carpet and street style.  She doesn’t go for all out over-the-top looks, but she does like to spice things up.  Just like her music, she throws together some hip-hop, color and a dash of sex to complete any outfit.

Katy Perry, whose hair color changes more often than Kanye West’s mood, goes all out with her hair color and outfits.  From rainbow, to pink, to blue, Katy’s hair truly is like a firework. Out of all the starlets, she seems to have the most fun with her looks, and she seamlessly incorporates her style into everyday wear.

Nicki Minaj definitely has some of the most outlandish outfits. Although some of her looks are fabulous, others don’t quite come together in a way that us normal folk can understand. (Can you say Grammy’s 2012?).  Like her many alter-egos, Nicki Minaj lets her personality show through her clothes, and I’m sure she wouldn’t be afraid to try out those implanted cat whiskers.

So are the personas described in The Capitol of The Hunger Games really that different from the celebrities on the covers of our magazines? Not really, but it still may be better to leave the quirky looks to the performers.
