UNC Greek Life Gives Back

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

All Greek organizations on campus have national philanthropies or specific charities for which they raise money; and we’re not talking about tiny bake sales, either.  Through 5K races, benefit dinners, kickball and dodge ball tournaments thousands of dollars are raised for good causes every year.

If you miss the days of playing kickball in your middle school gym class then Alpha Chi Omega’s Second Annual Kickball Tournament on November 6 would be perfect for you. Last year, Alpha Chi raised over $4000 for the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County. The FVPC used this money to continue their domestic violence support groups, a 24-hour hotline and a court advocacy program right in Chapel Hill.

Another notable fundraiser coming up is Alpha Delta Pi’s Ron-A-Thon on November 13. This race benefits the Ronald McDonald House charities. ADPi sororities nationwide declared the Ronald McDonald House as their philanthropy in 1979. This organization has raised almost $4 million to date for the charity.

Then, Pi Beta Phi’s and Phi Delta Theta’s Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education will be on November 19. Another special fundraiser, this race benefits the Eve Carson Memorial Scholarship, First Book and CEO 4 Teens. Over $30,000 was raised for education last year alone.

Or, if you have an aversion to anything sports-related like me, there are still plenty of ways to have fun and do some good. Love to eat? Alpha Chi Omega and Sigma Alpha Epsilon are partnering up for a chili cook-off on November 4. Many groups on campus are getting together to cook up their best chili and enter the contest–even the UNC basketball team is cooking! See any Alpha Chi or SAE member for a ticket. Another yummy benefit dinner is the Phi Mu and Helping Paws spaghetti dinner and auction on November 16. Tickets are only $3 and benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and Coalition to Unchain Dogs.

These fundraisers are great ways to spend time with friends and to help out a cause. Why not exercise while helping education or the prevention of domestic violence? Whatever your interests, you can find a fundraiser that is fun and meaningful to you!
