Collegiettes, I am SO pumped for D.E.S.K. 2015! For those who don’t know, D.E.S.K. is a Wake Forest University campus tradition — a service event that’s been around since 2000. According to its website, D.E.S.K. stands for “discovering Education through Student Knowledge” and the goal of D.E.S.K. is, “to provide desks and school supplies for children in the Winston-Salem community who are in need of a place to study and learn in their homes.”
I stopped by the D.E.S.K. team’s weekly meeting last Wednesday to chat with Kelsey Drusch and Sarah Vivenzio, the senior co-chairs for this year. They filled me in on what goes on behind the scenes when planning for such a large event, why they love D.E.S.K. and how YOU can get involved this spring!
WHAT:
Each year, teams of Wake Forest student volunteers sign up to paint desks for children. Old Town Elementary School children will be the ones receiving the desks.Â
WHEN AND WHERE:Â
D.E.S.K. is Tuesday, April 7th from 3:00-7:00 pm on the Magnolia Quad. Teams are expected to arrive at least 30 minutes early to set up and pick out paint colors. Primary color paint and regular paint brushes will be provided, but teams are allowed to bring additional painting supplies if they so choose.Â

SARAH AND KELSEY’S RESPONSIBILITES:
“Kelsey and I oversee every decision redarding D.E.S.K. We chose commitee co-chairs and comittee members who will help make D.E.S.K. 2015 a success. We are working with Old Town Elementary school to figure out the exact number of children involved, looking for actual desks to give to the chidren and soliciting groups from Wake to register and sign up for the event. We are also working with our co-chairs to design awesome t-shirts that we will be selling around campus. We will be advertising the event using flyers and on social media!” — Sarah Vivenzio, ’15
WHY THEY GOT INVOLVED:
“I got involved with D.E.S.K. three years ago, and Kelsey got involved four years ago, because it is so inspirational. It feels great to see all of the children having an amazing time playing on campus, playing with the Wake teams and getting a personalized desk that they can bring home. D.E.S.K. encourages future learning for children in Winston-Salem and motivates them to want to keep learning every single day.” — Sarah Vivenzio, ’15
