Fall 2009 Nail Polish Colors and Trends

Show your dark side this fall season…with your nail polish!

The fall season is back, and it’s the time for Pumpkin Spice lattes, apple pies, corn mazes, and of course, a change in nail polish! Toss your bright summer shades to the side ladies, this season calls for bolder, darker nails. Marie Nguyen, a nail artist at Beaucage Salon and Spa on Newbury Street in Boston, which has been featured in Lucky magazine, gives Her Campus the inside scoop on this season’s nail trends for the college girl who does it all.

Casual Day Wear Another hectic day of classes and meetings? The dark brown nail polishes are perfect for your busy days in cozy fall sweaters and jeans. Better yet, dark brown shades compliment all types of skin tones.
Nail Polish Color Recommendations: ‘Boris and Natasha’ and ‘Midnight in Moscow’ in OPI’s Russian Collection. ‘Suzi Says Da!’ is OPI’s ideal chocolate brown

Girls’ Night Out Time to put away the books and bring out the classic dark reds and deep purple polishes. These shades are best for bringing attention to the hands, and when you’re out at night, either at dinner, or a campus party, or out on the town, everything should stand out! And don’t hesitate to put a light frost over your dark polishes; it adds depth to the color. Nail Polish Color Recommendations: ‘Wicked’ by Essie ‘Malaga Wine’ by OPI

Work/Internship/Interview You want to stand out in your job interviews, but never go too loud with your nail polish in a professional setting. When it comes to business, a pale pink shade can go a long way, and maybe land you the job! Nail Polish Color Recommendations: ‘Limo-Scene’ by Essie ‘Limo-Scene’ and ‘Sugar Daddy’ (a blend for girls with a pink skin tone) by Essie

Nail Length and Shape With dark nail polishes, you should aim for a square tip, with rounded corners. The square shape gives the image of longer nails. As for the length, go short this season because long nails with dark polishes tend to look like a Halloween costume. A shorter length is also healthier for your nails, because the colder weather causes long nails to become brittle. At your next mani, just tell the manicurist how you’d like your nails cut and shaped—they’re used to getting these types of requests and will know what to do!
