The weather is cooling down, well not really here in Hawai’i, but this means we are coming up on flu & COVID season. With fall semester in full swing, the stress levels rise and our immune systems drop. Here are some tips to keep you healthy this semester:\
- Nutrition

School gets busy and it’s easy to grab fast food or something quick in-between classes. However, eating a well-balanced meal is so important to keep your immune system working properly. If you are able to, meal prep lunch or dinners with lots of veggies, healthy proteins, and whole grains to bring with you to class or the library. If you need snacks, choose fruits or vegetables over bags of chips.
- Exercise

School work loads up and it’s hard to make time to step away from your desk and get active! Staying active is really important to keep your immune system working well! Head to the gym before or between classes a few times a week!
If you prefer outdoor activities, walk or ride your bike to school. Grab a friend and go for a hike or a surf!
- Stress Management

College is stressful and it’s hard to avoid. Unfortunately, stress takes a toll on our immune systems. Even though you might not be able to avoid stress, it’s important to incorporate stress management techniques to cope. Taking breaks is a great way to relieve stress, even if it’s just for five minutes. Going for a walk, deep breathing or meditation, calling a friend, and doing an activity you enjoy are all great ways to take a break.
- Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your mental and physical health. It’s hard in college to always get an adequate amount of sleep. Staying off electronic devices before bed, stretching, reading, and setting up a consistent bedtime are all great ways to aid in getting the proper amounts of sleep.
Sometimes it is inevitable to get sick, but if you take your health and wellness seriously you can possibly prevent yourself from getting sick this fall semester!
