Like many others, fall is my favorite season. The warmth slowly fades into the cool breeze blowing through the town, shuffling the leaves about the ground. While there are lots of things to do in our lovely college town, I wanted to get specific about what fall-themed activities are available. Over the next couple of months, as summer turns to fall, I hope you’re able to explore these attractions and find your own favorites.

If you’re looking to get some fresh air and a getaway, there are plenty of popular hiking trails within minutes of Blacksburg including the Cascades and Bald Knob. If you’re willing to drive a little further, there are plenty of amazing trails to view the gorgeous fall foliage as you get closer to West Virginia.

The Blacksburg Farmer’s Market is a classic Saturday morning activity, and it’s especially fun to explore the seasonal goodies that come with the colder weather. Open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but also Wednesday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. if you’re trying to avoid the weekend crowds.
- Movies at the Lyric

If it’s too cold to hang outside, consider seeing a movie at the Lyric. The 1930s-era restored theater shows multiple movies, but also is home to performances by various music and dance groups on campus. Upcoming events include showings of God’s Creatures, Amsterdam, and WUVT presents The Vegabonds and the Jared Stout Band.

For an easy way to relax after classes, take a stroll through the Hahn Horticulture Gardens near McComas hall. As the seasons are changing, don’t miss the changing of leaves and blooming of buds. A sunset walk or reading under the trees is the perfect activity for those looking for more fresh air, but aren’t able to get out hiking.

Just a little way out in Christiansburg, this sweet farm has multiple seasonal events and music performances from local bands. Don’t miss the lovely Pumpkin Festival, complete with a corn maze, hay rides, petting zoo animals, lawn games, axe throwing, and local food trucks. Every Thursday through Sunday, running from now until Oct. 30.
