During the height of the pandemic, not as many movies were being released because we could not go to the theaters for a while. But now in 2022, it seems as if cinema has come back to life! Going to the movie theater is one of my favorite things to do. Getting some popcorn, a slushie and some candy is one of the best joys in life. I think it is especially fun to see a scary movie on the big screen. It makes the experience feel more elevated and spooky. With that being said, I have noticed that horror movies in particular have been ‘killing’ it this year so far. Here is a list of some of my favorites that I have seen!
“X” and “Pearl”
In 2022, A24 released two companion horror films, both written and directed by Ti West: “X” and the prequel “Pearl”. Both of these films star Mia Goth, who plays two roles in “X”, Pearl and Maxine. A24 is also planning on releasing the third movie to complete this trilogy titled “MaXXXine”.
This movie trilogy feels so original and campy which is why I love it so much. “X” is about a group of young filmmakers in the year 1979 who set out to make an adult film on a farm in rural Texas. However, when the elderly hosts catch wind of what they are up to, the cast finds themselves fighting for their lives. This film was so fun to watch. Each character has their quirks and it really felt like a classic slasher but with an original twist.
The film “Pearl” was released only six months after “X”. It is a prequel to the first movie and follows the life of the old lady in “X” named Pearl (also played by Mia Goth). The film takes place in 1918 on the same farm as the movie “X”. Pearl is living there with her parents but dreams of getting away and becoming famous. She will do just about anything it takes to have a glamorous life as she has seen in the movies. I really enjoyed this movie! Mia Goth is a phenomenal actress. It was riveting and terrifying to see Pearl lose her mind and going totally off the rails.
“Barbarian”
Going into this movie I had no idea what to expect. I never watched a trailer or read any sort of description, so to say I was shocked (in a good way) is an understatement. Without giving too much away, the film follows a young woman who travels to Detroit for a job interview. She rents an Airbnb, but when she arrives there late at night, she discovers that the house had been double booked and a man was staying there already. With much hesitation, she decides to stay the night but soon discovers that there is a lot more to fear than her unexpected roommate.
I do not usually get scared at movies, but this one felt pretty terrifying to me. Honestly, some good words to describe this movie are disgusting, weird and unsettling. This may sound like a negative description but when it comes to a good horror movie, this is what I would be looking for.
“Scream”
The original 1996 “Scream” is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is the perfect slasher film and it is a must needed rewatch during the halloween season! I was very excited yet reluctant to hear that the fifth movie from the “Scream” franchise was going to be released eleven years after the fourth fim. Even though most of the “Scream” films follow the same plot, this one stands out for me. This is mainly because of the main character played by Jenna Ortega. I feel like Ortega could be the next “it girl” for horror films. Her look of horror and terrified face is priceless; she makes you feel her emotions while you are watching. The sixth “Scream” movie is set to be released in 2023 but Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) will not be making her return.
Watching scary movies is one of the best ways to celebrate the Halloween season. Hopefully these films can be some contenders for your next movie night. Happy spooky season!
