Abel Tesfaye aka “The Weeknd” has become one of my favorite singers over the past few years. My first time hearing about him was when a YouTuber named Lilly Singh mentioned him. It might have been an interview or something, but she said, “I didn’t know his song Can’t Feel My Face was about drugs until my parents told me.”

Now, at this point in time Can’t Feel My Face was everywhere. I heard it on the radio in the car, in stores and in school. But, I didn’t know who he was, and I didn’t listen to any of his other music. When I heard Lilly say that I went on YouTube and listened to it. After that, I promise I became obsessed. I listened to Beauty Behind the Madness, House of Ballons, and Kiss Land in the span of a few days. Over the years I’ve kept up with his album releases and really everything else he does. I don’t know how to describe it, but his music makes me feel something. I can feel his emotions in his songs. Some of his songs make me feel so alive. Others show me just how sad I can get. With every album he’s doing something new and it amazes me every time.

Now that my love confession is over let’s get into the good stuff. Here are some of my favorite songs by The Weeknd:

1. Often

Often makes me feel sexy inside. It makes me feel like a man is obsessed with having me every night.

2. The Hills

This song makes me feel like I’m a supermodel that he’s coming to see. And it makes me feel like we have a secret relationship that I can’t tell my friends about. One thing I love? Doing things I shouldn’t be doing…

3. Six Feet Under

Six Feet Under reminds me of another song. Six Inch Heels by Beyonce. Now, I don’t know if this comparison has ever been made but these songs definitely remind me of each other. Both are about women that really grind and hustle to get what they want. These women don’t need a man. They are independent. They make their money and go home. Honestly, when I need some motivation while trying to make money, this is a song I listen to.

4. I Feel It Coming

This is a very sexual song. Now of course it’s about having an orgasm. But! It’s also a song about reassurance and trust. The woman he is with can be comfortable with him and let her guard down. This song makes me feel like I’m melting right into his arms while he croons about how he’ll take care of me.

5. House of Ballons/Glass Table Girls

To be honest, I don’t really listen to this as much as I used to. But, when it comes on in my playlist I don’t skip it.

6. Save Your Tears

The original and also the remix with Ariana Grande is just *chefs kiss*. Perfect! Everyone knows what happens when you break up with someone. The connection is over and you go back to being strangers (most of the time). Sometimes there are still regrets and feelings that linger. The Weeknd addresses what that feels like. It’s the perfect post-breakup song when you’re not sure if you should go back or not. My vote: don’t!

7. Heartless

OOOOOOHHHHH. So! Heartless makes me feel like I’m the baddest bitch in the world. Heartless inspires me to turn off my emotions (do you know this TVD/Originals reference?) and just make a mess because I don’t care. I’m usually an emotional person but when I really stop caring? It’s over for the other person.

8. Best Friends

This hit a little too close to home. That’s all I’ll say.

9. Is there Someone Else?

I love this song because it speaks to the insecurities everyone has in a relationship. At some point we all wonder if our partner would rather be with someone else. Or if they have someone else. When things are going wrong in a relationship or if your partner is pulling away this thought creeps up on you. This song addresses what you feel in a way that makes you feel like you’re not that crazy for thinking it too.

10. Out of Time

A timeless classic, I’ll say. From what I think and the internet says: this song is about a woman walking out of his life. She got tired of waiting for him while he focused on something else. This is something I have felt before too. Unfortunately, that’s how life works sometimes. When you can’t give to a relationship because you’re also giving to yourself and your projects it can fail. It’s a natural course. If you really need to pull away and focus on yourself then do that. But don’t leave someone hanging and wondering. Out of Time is an example of what happens when you do that.

There are many more songs I could include but 10 is a good amount. As a sendoff note: Have you heard of the new show he’ll be in? It’s called The Idol and comes out sometime in 2023 on HBO Max. I don’t have HBO Max but will I get it just to watch this show?

Yes.
