The Art of Giving Back with Sofia Rothenberg

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

3 Heart Strings is a South Florida-based bracelet company founded by three friends. While that may sound like a relatively normal business endeavor, 3 Heart Strings isn’t your average jewelry company. What makes them unique is the fact that they are completely non-profit, and instead choose new charities to donate their proceeds to monthly. These bracelets have served as an incredible way to give back to local communities and this week, I got to speak to co-founder Sofia Rothenberg about the 3 Heart Strings mission!

Her Campus (HC): What influenced you to start 3 Heart Strings?

Sofia Rothenberg (SR): Two friends and I started 3 Heart Strings in 2014 as a way to give back to our community. We wanted to help others and raise money for charity while doing something fun that we enjoyed!

HC: How did you go about the process of starting the business?

SR: We started by making bracelets and selling them at the local farmer’s market and over the years were able to expand to an online business.

HC: How has being a co-founder affected the process?

SR: Being a co-founder has made the process so much easier because we all work together and support one another. We also all care about 3 Heart Strings so deeply.

HC: How do you find causes to devote to bracelets?

SR: When we first started the company, we did a lot of research on where to donate every month, but as we have grown, charities started contacting us to be the charity of the month.

HC: How do you guys get the word out about your bracelets and their associated causes?

SR: Social media is super helpful in getting the word out, as well as word of mouth in our local community.

HC: Can you tell me more about your West Coast chapter?

SR: We started the West Coast chapter because we were looking to bring 3 Heart Strings from the East to West Coast to expand the business, and it was a good franchising opportunity. Our West Coast chapter is made up of some amazing girls who carry out the 3 Heart Strings mission!

HC: How has this business impacted you as a person?

SR: This business has had such an impact on me and has shown me not only how money can help people, but that a bracelet can be a universalizing symbol that gives people strength.

HC: What is the most challenging thing about starting and running a business?

SR: The most challenging thing about starting a business at such a young age is being taken seriously by others and balancing business and school.

HC: What’s one piece of advice for someone looking to start a business?

SR: The one piece of advice I would give to someone looking to start a business is to just have to do it! It can be intimidating at first but if you are passionate, it will all work out.

HC: What’s your favorite aspect of running a business?

SR: My favorite aspect of running 3 Heart Strings is interacting with the different charities and forming connections with them.

HC: What’s your best memory associated with 3 Heart Strings?

SR: My best memories associated with 3 Heart Strings are working at different farmer’s markets with the other girls.
