It’s time. November 8th has officially arrived, meaning it’s voting season. For many first-year students in college, voting can be a first-time thing. Voting is chic, voting is important and you’ve decided to vote…but now what?

Voting is important, that’s why. In itself, that should always be enough. Voting is an essential part of how our society works. Your voice matters and the way you can use that voice is by voting! The polls are betting, I’d even say depending, on women and minorities to skip out on such an important factor of our democracy.

With what’s on the ballot, we can’t let this midterm election slip out of reach. With abortion rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, gun legislation and immigration on the line, every vote counts. What better option is there than letting the future of our country lie in the hands of the future leaders of our country — us. This is why we must vote. With such a diverse pool of individuals in higher forms of education, we cannot let this opportunity slide. It is up to us to make a change.

It’s easy. Although the mail-in deadline has passed, there is still the option to vote in person and various locations across Pittsburgh less than a bus ride away! Think about going between classes, before your Pilates class or after a study session at the library. If you missed the mail-in deadline and your out-of-state, your effort should not stop there! If you missed the deadline and didn’t get to vote, make sure others don’t make the same mistake! Tell your friends, remind your family and post about it on social media. The effort does not stop until the last voting poll closes. Reach deep and pull out your inner Elle Woods, she always knows how to get things done!

Great question! Being a student at the University of Pittsburgh makes voting a lot more convenient. Hopefully, your professors have allowed you to miss class to vote, so make the best of it! The polls run from 7 a.m.- 8 p.m., so set your timers, grab a friend and some coffee and most importantly don’t forget to vote this midterm!
