For those reading this that live in places that don’t go through cold seasons, I envy you.
For those of us that do have harsh winters, such as those of us residing in Western New York, you get what it feels like to just be freezing. Freezing all of the time.
On top of chilly winters, last year around this time, I found out that I was anemic. My body does not produce enough iron in my blood which causes easy bruising, and fatigue, and you are most likely always cold. I am always the one to be complaining about how cold I am, even in the summertime.
Throughout my lifelong awareness of not getting frostbite and my new diagnosis, I have learned to pair my fashion ideas with the importance of warmth. I have found that my perfect outfits always include layers.
Now I feel some may get confused by the use of the term layers. This is not to say that I wear long underwear under my jeans. Layering your pieces of clothing means a turtle neck under a sweater, a crop top under a bulkier long sleeve or even a light jacket over a crew-neck sweatshirt.
An example, while I write this story, I paired a long sleeve striped shirt under a boatneck sweater and rolled the sleeves. This combination gives just enough of a view that I have a casual striped shirt under my comfy, oversized, cable knit sweater. It’s cute, or at least I think so when I am not freezing.
Layering is stylish too! Now that the grunge and indie trends are coming back, I find more and more fashion trends to be involving layers. Vests, leg warmers, turtlenecks, sweater vests, puffer jackets and more.
Layers are also comforting. The idea that I have one more item of clothing on is sometimes protective, like an extra layer of I can do with what the world throws at me. And sometimes not wanting to always wear something that is skin-tight is okay. In my mind, the bulkier the layering, the better.
The layers are practical, cute, stylish, comforting and everything in between. Let’s face it, I am sure that we have all had that experience where we decided to go with the more fashionable outfit than the warmest, and who wants to have that chilling experience again?
So, choose to layer! It can be as simple as starting with a turtle neck, bulky socks, or anything you please. In my opinion, it is the easiest trend to accomplish.
