As Republicans gain control of the House, Nancy Pelosi stepped down from her position as Speaker of the House.Â
Pelosi will stay in Congress to represent California’s 12th district. Pelosi has formerly served as the House Democratic Whip and was the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House.Â
Although Republicans now hold the majority, there is internal conflict among Republican members.Â
The race for the new Speaker of the House has made it apparent that the Republican majority is Republicans versus MAGA Republicans. In other words, Republicans who supported Donald Trump and those who have called his bluff.
The minority leader, Kevin McCarthy, faced Andy Biggs of Arizona for the title of Speaker of the House.Â
“I’ve seen enough. I cannot vote for Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker. I do not believe he will ever get to 218 votes, and I refuse to assist him in his effort to get those votes,” Biggs tweeted.Â
McCarthy won the position with a party vote of 188-31.Â
In the 2022 midterm elections, the GOP gained eight seats and Democrats lost nine, giving Republicans a 220-213 majority in the House.Â
The 118th Congress will be divided with Democrats keeping the Senate majority and Republicans holding power in the House.Â
