At Connecticut College, our dining hall, which we lovingly refer to as “Harris,” keeps us well-fed and happy… for the most part. On campus this year, the food discourse has been elevated due to the repetitive themes each night of the week. Whether it’s Thursday Night Tacos, Saturday Night Pizza, or Chicken Parm Tuesdays, we all have our favorite, and least favorite, Harris meals. Here are some of our thoughts:
Since my freshman year, Mojo Night on Sunday’s has been my favorite. The pork, rice, beans, plantains, and Mojo sauce remind me of my favorite Cuban meal my family makes at home which uses a similar garlic citrus sauce. I used to look forward to Pasta Bar, but the vegetable, meat, and sauce options to be added into our pasta has been cut down significantly.
Personally, I choose not to go to Harris and instead cook in my kitchen when they have the Caesar Salad Bar, Saturday Night Pizza, and Chicken Parm (I’m not standing in that line). The limited food options on the weekends make it difficult to put together a meal and feel satiated, and eating Chicken Parm and Garlic Knots every Tuesday night gets pretty tiring (seriously, that food is not worth that line).

My favorite night last year was Pasta Bar night because they made the pasta to order. You could pick from a variety of meats, vegetables, and sauces, and they would sauté it all on a pan with salt and pepper. The pasta always tasted so fresh and delicious. This year you combine all of the ingredients yourself on a plate and they don’t sauté it extra. Without that final touch, Pasta Bar is missing the mark this year. I would have to say that Chicken Parm night has risen the rankings and has become my top Harris night this year, simply because of the garlic knots. While the line for Chicken Parm is always absurdly long, it goes by fast if you are waiting with some friends, and the delicious, buttery garlic knots are worth the wait.

I am, personally, a huge fan of Sushi Bowl night on Fridays. It is pretty much the only thing that gets me out of my room or the library and into the cold and dark at 5:30pm. This year, there has been tuna available every week, which is a huge luxury I don’t take for granted. I do, however, miss Sushi Bowl lunches. Additionally, the Tuesday Night chicken parm and garlic knots (heavy emphasis on the garlic knots) always hits different. That being said, I am excited to go home and eat some new meals for a change.
