It is the season of the holidays and not long after our brand-new year! The new year is a newer version of yourself to be better. It is time to reflect on the past year and set goals for who you want to become in this new year. This semester I have been taking a class in the communication department called Environment and Media. As we have covered many ideas regarding climate change and media framing, one that becomes of importance is why our environment continues to decrease. The topic we have been discussing lately is the agricultural influence on our society. Media framing having an influence on our society and viewing various media by unalike audiences can lead to different interpretations of things like our environment. Different public views don’t know or know where to start to improve our environment. Here are some reasons why I am changing my diet to vegetarian alternatives rather than supporting the meat industry as one of my new year’s resolutions.

  1. Gas emissions and less deforestation
  • Two environmental detriments we are currently going through, as factories are cutting down trees and then exhausting methane and carbon into our breathing air. The meat industry’s factories collectively all around the world cause the most air pollution. If everyone in the world decided not to eat meat, gas emissions would be cut by 60% and fewer factories implanted could decrease our nature’s ecologies to be threatened or torn down.
  1. Fewer deaths and chances of cancer
  • Cutting down on meat will help with slimming the chance of any heart diseases or cancers which will also decrease the number of deaths.
  1. Viruses.
  • Remember the coronavirus, especially in 2020? The mental and emotional stress it caused the entire world. We have viruses because we consume various meats. The connectedness we are to our animals is one thing I never thought of until this class. The animals live for us, and we live for the animals. Covid didn’t randomly just happen to make 2020 the worst year ever. It happened because it exposed vulnerabilities in our society. It has many faults and one of them being is us eating animals.

Now I know eating meat can help with protein that fuels our bodies and is a traditional artifact in many cultures. Like Thanksgiving turkey, how could we not have it? There are many other ways we could add protein, which as my resolution I plan on working into my diet. Eliminating meat in our society could lead to unemployment in food industries and farming would be eliminated. That isn’t what I want out of this. Environmental communication is solely for awareness about it, considering it would be a major project to get rid of the meat industry for the economy. I do think there are alternative ways so that we could endure reforestation back into our society while meat still exists for people to eat. Any person who chooses to decrease their meat intake would be helpful for the future of our planet.
