Holley Petrie’s New Year Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Happy New Year, everyone; we made it another year around the sun. With every year comes with a clean slate, as some people say. I look forward to tidying up my slate, but not in a starting-over way. I think it’s important to build upon skills we learned the prior year and not forget the hardships, mistakes, fallouts and other messes we endured to get to where we are now. On the other hand, it’s still beneficial to set goals and resolutions for the new year, even if half or a quarter of them don’t come true. At least you sat down for 10-15 minutes and wrote about how you want to see your year pan out. So here are just some of my resolutions for 2023:

Graduate: As most of my readers know, I will be graduating this year, and I already know this resolution is to come true. But until I walk across the stage, anything can happen between now and then. So until it becomes a reality, it still stands as a resolution on my list.

Get a Good Paying Job: Well, out into the real world I go after I graduate. The next chapter of my life is about to unfold enormously, and I require a steady job to make all of my dreams come true. I have had some internships and paid side jobs, and may start my own business as a Social Media Consultant. I am still gunning for a career in the music industry, but I may have to put that on the back burner until I get some bigger experience jobs. So instead, I am focusing on getting a job that I still love, like social media marketing, and will be able to start funding the new chapter of my life so I can eventually move out.

Travel: How will you travel between finding a job, graduating and saving money? Traveling is important to me because when I am on my own in a city, not relating to anyone, I genuinely learn crucial life lessons, skills and about myself. So even if I just travel for long weekend trips to different states along the East Coast in janky hotels, that will satisfy my hunger. For longer trips to Europe or across the county, I will still tag along with a family member or wait ’til I have enough money to cover all of the costs myself. One way or another, I will be traveling in 2023.

Read More: As I have gotten older, I gravitate toward my phone and social media more than books, and most people can say that about themselves. However, as an English major, most people expect me to always be reading some type of literature. And yes, I do love reading, but it is usually required reading by teachers in which I get my reading done rather than for pleasure. If I do read for pleasure, it’s most likely poetry, a graphic novel or fanfic. But now that I am graduating and will not be forced to read, I want to explore more of my time in reading for fun.

Continue Writing: I want to get back into the habit of writing in my journal again and, of course, continue writing poetry which has been so much fun and a stress reliever. I also want to write an autobiography about my life one day as I feel people can take away many things from it. Looking back, my writing journey has taken me far more than I expected, and it’s been one of my proudest achievements, so I will never stop writing my story on paper and in life.

Holley is currently a senior at Montclair State University; she majors in English and minors in Business. Her wish is to pursue a career in music marketing.
