On January 11, 2023, Shakira decided to start off the year with a good ol’ cup of revenge!
Now, we all know of the successful Columbian singer and her amazing hits, so it’s no surprise that her music has captured people’s attention once again. However, this particular song—which was released at the beginning of the year—is arguably one of the best diss songs an artist has created. Not only does she talk about her breakup, but she also name-drops in the lyrics.
For some backstory, Shakira and her former ex, Gerard PiquĂ©, had been dating for about 11 years. They also have two little boys, Sasha PiquĂ© Mebarak and Milan PiquĂ© Mebarak. However, even after 11 years and two children, the couple still hadn’t married. Their relationship was seemingly good, and many fans loved them together.
Being with someone for this long makes the breakup 10 times harder, and most people would likely have a difficult time coping with such heartbreak. Shakira, on the other hand, wasted no time when it came to her lyrical revenge.
Earlier this year on January 11, Shakira and BZRP released a single titled “BZRP Music Sessions #53”, targeted at her ex. Shakira also made sure that PiquĂ© himself knew the song was about no other than him.
In a couple of the lyrics, she uses a play on words where she mentions both her ex’s name and his mistress’ name.
Shakira sings, “PerdĂłn que te sal-pique” (which translates to “Sorry if it splashes you”), isolating the word “pique” to reference her ex Gerard PiquĂ©. She does the same in the chorus where she articulates “clara-mente” as a reference to Clara Chia Marti, the girl PiquĂ© cheated on Shakira with.
In her other verses, Shakira throws some obvious shade by saying, “You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo… you traded a Rolex for a Casio.” PiquĂ© decided to respond by driving in a Twingo the next day and getting sponsored by Casio. While he wanted to show how unbothered he was by the song, his actions very much showed the opposite.
Now the big question is, how did Shakira find out about this affair?
Supposedly, Clara Chia Marti had been going to Shakira’s house with PiquĂ© and eating her strawberry jam from the fridge. Shakira had mentioned that during their entire relationship together, PiquĂ© had never liked jam or eaten it, so she figured that his mistress did—and she was right.
There’s more to this, though. In one of her lyrics, she mentions that PiquĂ©’s parents are her neighbours. So, fittingly, she put a witch figure on her balcony facing her ex-in-laws while blasting her diss track.
All in all, I think Shakira did the right thing: she chose revenge, and she served it sweet.
