Miley Cyrus’ new song, “Flowers,” may be the first top hit of the 2023 year.  Although this song is amazing in itself, the drama behind the song and music video make this song better.  This song is written about Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus’ ex-husband.  The song was released on Liam Hemsworth’s birthday, which may be a really weird coincidence, but knowing Cyrus, it was definitely intentional. A perfect way to add to the drama of her new song.

When interpreting her lyrics, the opening lines reference their house that was built and burnt down by a wildfire in 2018.  The lyrics of the chorus of this song are based on Bruno Mars’ song, “When I Was Your Man.”  Cyrus’ ex-husband dedicated this song to her on their wedding day, so Cyrus makes a play on words and shows her husband that she can do everything that he told her he would do: buy her own flowers, hold her own hand, etc.

In the music video, Cyrus wears an oversize suit that looks like Liam Hemsworth’s when they were on the red carpet together for his Avengers: Endgame premiere in 2019.  She was just being silly and pretended to lick him, and he asked her to behave.  Also in the music video, Cyrus does a dance move where she shakes her shoulders. When she once did it previously, Hemsworth told her, “We’re not doing this. Not on the carpet.”  Miley Cyrus of course does it in her video to show that she can do anything she wants and he can’t tell her what to do.

Overall, Cyrus’ song is about self-empowerment and showing that she doesn’t need a man, one of the best messages she could have sent to her listeners.  This is the best way to start 2023, and many are waiting for her next album Endless Summer to be released on March 10, 2023, which is supposed to be a “love letter to LA.”

Manhattan '24

Hi I'm Emily! I am in my Senior Year at Manhattan College, graduating in Spring 2024. I am studying Childhood Special Education with an upward extension to middle school with a double major in English. My goal in life is to teach elementary school and later on, teach middle school. Although I don't have a position in my Her Campus chapter, I am still an active writer for Her Campus! I write about all different topics for Her Campus, anything that interests me or that I believe other girls will find useful and informational. I am a team captain on the Manhattan College cheerleading team, so I may write about that sometimes. I also love sorority rush season so I have written about my sorority a few times. I believe that Her Campus is an amazing source for women to put their work out there and influence other girls. I love being a part of this organization and being able to write about whatever I love. This is the best outlet for me to learn more about my writing style, experiment with different topics that I would not be allowed to write about in a class, and grow as a writer.
