Some may say that love letters are the epitome of romance. For others, however, writing love letters may seem outdated. A more contemporary approach to this topic is making a playlist for someone. Making playlists is an art and can be love letters in themselves. The songs you choose, the lyrics, the artists, the album covers, and even the playlist icon- it all plays an important role in expressing your emotions, whether it be for yourself or for someone else. Another option is making a collaborative playlist for you and your significant other or you and your friends. This is a unique way to share with others and exchange music tastes! Everyone loves music in one way or another, so making a playlist for or with someone you care about can be an incredibly bonding and intimate experience.Â
As my roommates and I were painting wooden hearts for some Valentine’s Day decor in our apartment, I felt like listening to Valentine’s Day music, so, naturally, I opened Spotify and searched for Valentine’s Day playlists. The first one that came up was a playlist made by Spotify curated for me based on artists I listen to- all love themed. I thought that was extremely cool and said to myself, “Wow, it’s like Spotify wrote me a love letter.” Thus, the inspiration for this article took hold. I thought about how I’ve made playlists for and with people and how some of those were indeed a love letter of sorts to those people. The lyrics of songs can equate to the words of a letter. Simply putting songs in a playlist that remind you of that person is so moving and special. Every time you listen to the songs in their playlist, you will now forever think of them. The same goes if you make a collaborative playlist with someone. The songs in that playlist are your songs, and the two of you can jam out together and be reminded of each other whenever those specific songs come on. I personally think that this is super cute and romantic and believe most couples would enjoy this as part of a present or a fun activity to do together!Â
I have to say, the songs that Spotify put together for me really was the perfect love letter of songs. Some songs they included on my curated playlist are “The Love Club” by Lorde, “why are you here” by Machine Gun Kelly, “Cosmic Love” by Florence and the Machine, “Finding You” by Kesha, “Mystery of Love” by Sufjan Stevens, “Today Was A Fairytale” (Taylor’s Version) by Taylor Swift, and “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey. These are some ideas if you like any of those artists if you want to create your own playlist or make one for someone. Making your own love playlist is also a great way to show some self- love not only on Valentine’s Day, but everyday of the year! Picking songs that you love or remind you of self- love is equivalent to you writing a love letter to yourself, which is important as well. When creating a playlist for someone else, choosing songs specifically for their lyrics or meaning to you and how they relate to someone you love is so meaningful and takes the “old fashioned” concept of writing a love letter and puts it in a whole new perspective. Sometimes, when people can’t find the words, the music will. Music touches and moves us in such beautiful ways, and when someone finds the time to search out specific songs for you, it can almost be better than if they were to write you a love letter themselves. They’re letting the music talk for them, which is a different kind of creativity. I would like to thank Spotify for making me feel special by picking out such lovely songs for my Valentine’s Day playlist, and I encourage you to make a playlist for someone important in your life as a little love letter of your own to them.<3
