Everyone has characters they grew up loving and admiring. Most of the time, these characters have a large impact on our lives and how we view the world. These fictional obsessions can come from shows, movies or books that make us feel understood and like we have someone to relate to. Below are just a few of my favorite comfort characters.
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
I think every little nerdy girl for the last 25 years has wanted to be Hermione. Not only does she have magical powers and go on great adventures, but her smarts and confidence made her really stand out. Seeing a smart girl be praised by so many people for her dynamic character traits really helped me learn to be myself at a young age. Hermione is one of the first people I can think of who made it cool to be smart. I think this is why I still continue to watch the movies or read my favorite chapters of the book when I am feeling sad.
Nick Miller (New Girl)
I started watching New Girl my freshman year of high school, and I don’t think I have stopped since. I watch it every night to fall asleep and have probably watched the series the whole way through at least eight times. It is easily my favorite show and probably always will be. This character immediately became my favorite and still is today. At the beginning of the show, he starts off a complete mess, but he eventually finds his place in the world and the girl of his dreams. This always gives me hope that no matter how hard things get they will always get better.Â
The March Girls (Little Women)
When I first watched the movie, “Little Women,” I knew almost instantly that Jo was my favorite. Her love of adventure and writing was something I really related to. Although now that I have read the book, I think I love all of them in their own unique ways. Meg is always taking care of her younger siblings and doing what is best for them. Jo’s determination leads her to believe she will achieve all her life goals. Beth’s optimism and love makes her not only the light but also the glue of the family. Amy, although has many flaws, recognizes them and works to overcome them in the way most characters cannot.Â
