Reese Witherspoon has delighted us again with her latest film, Your Place or Mine. Debuted on Netflix and produced by Witherspoon’s company Hello Sunshine in collaboration with others, the relationship between lifelong friends Debbie and Peter charm viewers. It concludes with a more realistic message than a typical romantic comedy.
Debbie is a single mother who is hyper-focused on her son and maintaining his incredibly sheltered life in Los Angeles. She dreams of being a writer but feels stifled by the practicalities of monetary commitments, maternal obligations, and personal fears. On the other coast, Peter resides in a luxurious New York apartment with beautiful views but lacks a long-term relationship and family. He works as a business consultant and ultimately supports Debbie’s desire to resume school to further her accounting career.
In a The Holiday-esque turn-of-events, Peter and Debbie venture to one another’s homes across the nation. During their respective journeys, they uncover parts of undiscovered parts of one another, their friendship, and ultimately what they want for their future.
As we approach our long weekend break, there is no better time to have a girls’ night or date night and enjoy a more platonic romantic story of two untethered adults seeking purpose and love.
