Taylor Swift’s Surprise Songs: My Heart Slowly Breaks Every Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

If you’re a Swiftie and attending the Era’s tour, then you know that Taylor is playing a surprise acoustic song every night; one that will not be repeated again on the tour. And as someone attending one of the LA shows all the way in August, I can feel my favorite songs slipping away into a moment in time (easter egg intended). So, every night that she performs, I anxiously wait for another song to reach the category of Taylor song’s that I may never hear live in my lifetime. So, here are the top three songs that quite literally broke my heart when I saw them posted by update accounts:

Cowboy Like Me

My night was ruined. Quite possibly, my life was ruined. I kept telling everyone around me I didn’t care what song she played as long as it was not “Cowboy Like Me.” And wouldn’t you know it, one night in Vegas she decided that it was the best time to play it. And the icing on top of the cake was that this show actually got TWO songs and their next one was none other than “White Horse.” You know that sinking feeling you get in your stomach when you just failed a really important exam or paper? Yeah, that’s exactly how I was feeling when I listened to the song on my phone rather than in a stadium live.

Mirrorball

I have claimed to be a mirrorball a thousand times over since the song was released. And for playing this song without me, I am a bit more forgiving because I understand that she had to start the tour off with a bang. I may be completely biased, but I don’t think there is a better song to hear than Mirrorball as the surprise song. I think it perfectly captures the essence of always trying but somehow coming up short. Hearing this live would have led me to a severe anxiety attack; the amount of tears that would spill out of my eyes would be absolutely insane. But again, I forgive Taylor because I understand her vision.

The Lucky One

This song does not get the love it deserves. This song’s lyrics should be painted on museum walls. There should be poems written about it. It should be passed out every single day on Bruinwalk so we can remember what Taylor gave to us. I didn’t know how badly I wanted to hear this song live until I realized I couldn’t. Like the moment I started watching videos of her playing the song, I was suddenly missing something that I honestly never had to begin with. I think it’s probably one of the best songs to hear at a concert because it’s so beautifully upbeat, but the lyrics are so tragically heartbreaking.

Mean

This song instantly brings me back to a particular movement in my childhood: my sister cornering me and forcing me to listen to her sing the chorus just because I would not play dolls with her. Hearing this song live would have been such an honor. Growing up, Taylor was such an important part of the music I listened to, so I would have loved to feel that nostalgia of going back to a moment in time. I know little me would have loved to scream this song at the top of her lungs in a stadium, and now that I’ve grown up, the sentiment remains the same. I would love to scream this at the top of my lungs, as I finally understand what she was trying to say.

Although I am complaining a lot, I would like to put it out there that I will so happily take whatever songs she decides to play during the LA shows. These songs just stuck out to me because I go through long periods of fixation where I only listen to one song for months on end and all of these just so happen to fall into that category. We all know that Taylor never ever disappoints, so whatever she has up her sleeve for the remainder of the tour will be just as special as her previous shows. Now even with all that, Taylor please save “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” for me!
