Spoiler warning: Spoilers for Yellowjackets Seasons 1 and 2 follow. If teenage angst, soccer uniforms, and supernatural entities were all thrown inside a blender, you would get Showtime’s Yellowjackets. Yellowjackets follows the aftermath of a plane crash in 1996 involving a high school soccer team in the middle of the wilderness. Over the course of 18 months, the group begins to find themselves battling not only high school drama, but unexplainable supernatural figures in the wild. The series is split into two timelines: 1996 and 2021, where we follow the survivors in modern day as they still find themselves coping with the tragedy and the aftermath of their returns.
As Yellowjackets is rearing its end to the second season on May 26, many fans have been speculating and creating theories on social media about what questions will be answered in the finale, and potential explanations to some of the events that have occurred throughout Season 2. If you’re a Yellowjackets fan and want to know what theories are out there about some of the series’ biggest mysteries, don’t worry: I have you covered.
What is the noise Mari keeps hearing?
As Season 2 progresses, it’s become increasingly clear that Mari is hearing something inside the cabin the soccer team is living in. Throughout the season, Mari keeps noting to the team that she consistently keeps hearing a dripping noise inside of the cabin.
Many fans believe that this could be seen as Mari beginning to hallucinate, similar to how other characters like Taissa have begun to hallucinate throughout the rest of the season. It’s worth noting that Mari is the only character on the show that hears this dripping sound, as everyone else keeps brushing it off.
Who really is Pit Girl?
The opening scene of Season 1 throws the audience immediately into the Yellowjackets world as we follow a girl running through the snowy wilderness, being chased by her own team members. She eventually falls into a large pit, leading to her demise. Fans have long been speculating on who Pit Girl might be, and in Season 1, many thought that this could potentially be Lottie. But by confirming that Lottie is alive in Season 2, that theory was immediately debunked.
The second guess of who Pit Girl could potentially be was Mari, partially due to her black hair. If you read the first theory and compare Mari’s hallucinations to the noises that Pit Girl was hearing, it’s very possible that Mari could have been hallucinating the noises in the wilderness as she’s escaping from the team, leading to her ultimate demise as Pit Girl.
what will the group do about Javi’s death?
Ever since the Season 1 finale, the disappearance of Travis’ brother Javi has become one of the leading fan theories online. Many believed that Javi may have been lost due to a blizzard or potentially getting eaten by a bear. The beginning of Season 2 continues the mystery of where Javi could be, as most of the characters believe that he’s no longer alive. Lottie has a premonition that Javi is alive, however, which comes true as Season 2 progresses.
However, in Episode 8, the team ends up chasing Javi into a lake, resulting in his untimely death by falling into the water. It’s clear that this has strongly affected Natalie, Javi’s closest friend, as he calls out to her during the final moments. We don’t get a definite answer of what the team is going to do with Javi, but it doesn’t look like it will be good for the future of the group.
Will Shauna and Jeff get caught?
One of the major plotlines of Season 1 explores Shauna in the 2021 timeline having an affair with Adam, an artist that is first introduced in the second timeline of the series. Adam and Shauna end up meeting because of a minor car accident, and begin to hide their affair so that Shauna’s husband, Jeff, will not find out.
The relationship comes to a halt when Shauna ends up murdering Adam in his loft after he reveals that he knows about what occurred when the Yellowjackets were stuck in the wilderness. This sets off a course of reactions that leads Shauna’s daughter, Callie, to figure out about the affair and realize that her mother is involved in Adam’s supposed disappearance. Jeff ultimately does find out about Shauna’s affair, and begins to help Shauna destroy evidence of the affair.
However, as Season 2 comes to an end, it’s clear that more people are figuring out that Shauna had an affair and the stakes are consistently getting higher. It’s not yet determined if the finale episode will result in Shauna and Jeff getting caught for covering up the affair and murder, but as more people keep finding out about Shauna’s affair and Adam’s death, there’s no doubt in my mind that the suspicions will be talked about in the finale.
