Keke Palmer proved once again why she is the It girl and no one should ever cross her. And she did so by starring in an iconic (and shady) music video for Usher’s song “Boyfriend,” which fans think is a shot at her own boyfriend Darius Jackson. Her Campus reached out to Jackson’s team for comment, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
Let’s backtrack a little to a time when the internet was on Ms. Palmer’s side against her own boyfriend. Back in July, Palmer attended an Usher concert in Vegas where a video of her being serenaded surfaced. However, her boyfriend and father to her baby, Darius Jackson, had some things to say about the moment with Palmer and Usher. He tweeted some bold statements, including, “It’s the outfit tho… you a mom.” Fans had some harsh words for Jackson following him essentially subtweeting his own GF. However, Palmer remained rather silent about the situation… until now. On Aug. 16, Usher released the music video for his song “Boyfriend” starring Palmer, and it is messy.
both Usher and Palmer poked fun at the drama while promoting the music video.
Despite never speaking on Jackson’s comments towards Palmer, both the multi-hyphenate queen and Usher are breaking their silence. On Aug. 16, Usher came to Twitter to promote his new song with the words “Nothing that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…” If you can’t recall, Jackson subtweeted Palmer after she attended Usher’s Vegas residency show on July 5. Seems a little shady if you ask me.
Palmer also got fans excited for the song when she came to Twitter to express how much the single means to her, saying it was a “dream come true” for her to be a girl in one of his videos.
The music video might have thrown some subtle shade at Jackson.
In Usher’s music video for “Boyfriend,” Palmer plays the main girl (as she should!) whose “boyfriend” is looking for Usher. Many of the lyrics, such as “Well, he should know I’m pretty easy to find / Just look for me wherever he sees you,” and pieces of the music video are reminiscent of the drama that followed the video of Usher serenading Palmer back in July.
In July, Jackson threw shade at Palmer’s outfit from the concert and her being a mother. One of his Tweets said, “We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is. This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.” As this Tweet was a direct shot at Palmer, one line she says in Usher’s music video makes her even more iconic.
At the end of the video, Palmer receives a phone call where she explains she is so tired that she missed a show, and her reasoning was iconic. She says, “I’m a mother… after all.” The statement was paired with a sly look at the camera — she knew what she was doing.
Though the statement could just be an ode to her life as a new mom, fans think the comment was a stab at Jackson’s July tweets and they are obsessing over it.
Fans are gagged over Palmer’s “I’m a mother” statement in the video.
Just like how Twitter was ready to fight tooth and nail for Palmer back in July, they are ready to hype her up for her appearance in the music video.
Many think this is shade towards Jackson and they are living for it.
Nonetheless, fans are hyping Palmer up for the queen she is, drama or not.
There has been no confirmation from either Palmer or Jackson if they are still together. Regardless of their relationship, Palmer deserves to be the main character and she slayed her part in “Boyfriend.”
