Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour has had its share of viral moments. Not only has the singer’s daughter, Blue Ivy, taken over everyone’s FYP with her now trending dance to “My Power,” but a highlight of Beyoncé’s tour has been the “everybody on mute” challenge. The viral moment consists of concert-goers remaining silent while Queen Bey sings, “Look around, everybody on mute,” from her song “Energy.” The audience is expected to stay “on mute” with Beyoncé and her dancers for about six seconds before she continues with the performance. The challenge has taken social media by storm and is still happening during the tour. Some even spend days — even weeks— leading up to their city’s Renaissance tour date preparing for this moment.
Since the start of her tour, attendees have shared videos of crowds either passing or failing the “everybody on mute” vibe check. From TikTok videos I’ve seen, several cities understood the assignment, but others had a hard time staying quiet, which left people heated. Some went as far as to curse out those who ruined the challenge by singing along. Let’s walk through the cities that passed the “everybody on mute” challenge — and the ones that failed.
Atlanta: Pass
Before night one in Atlanta even began on Aug. 11, fans attending Beyoncé’s show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium made sure everyone was on the same page about the challenge. While in line to get into the venue, fans held an “everybody on mute” challenge choir rehearsal to ensure everyone remained silent. The rehearsal ultimately paid off because later that night, Beyoncé named Atlanta the winner of the challenge. “Ya’ll won, ya’ll won, ya’ll won,” she announced, and the crowd erupted.
Washington D.C.: Pass
Before Atlanta was crowned the winner of the “everybody on mute” challenge, Washington D.C. held the title. Multiple videos from Aug. 6 showed concert-goers remaining silent as Beyoncé sang the lyrics to “Energy.” After the concert, the Grammy-winner shared on her official website that the city was the “eerbody on mute war winner.”
London: Failed Miserably
Now in London’s defense, the “everybody on mute” challenge went viral once the North American leg of the Renaissance began. During the European shows, audiences did not stay on mute for “Energy” — so it makes sense why London failed the challenge.
From the videos shared on social media, everyone attending Beyoncé’s concert at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in all four shows in London between May 30 to June 3 continued singing along to the song — ultimately failing the vibe check. But there are no hard feelings.
Miami: Questionable
As someone who has always loved Miami, I will stand by this city no matter what. However, Miami did not live up to its full potential when it came to the “everybody on mute” challenge. In videos from the concert, some can be heard yelling and singing along. In one TikTok video, a concertgoer can be seen telling a fellow audience member who was shouting “Beyoncé” to “shut the f*ck up.”
There are two more months left of the Renaissance World Tour, so it’ll be fun to see if any other cities make this list!
