The new film by DC Studios, Blue Beetle, arrived in Brazilian theaters on August 17. After difficult franchise debuts with Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, fans were waiting to see the development of the new character, since the recent superhero productions weren’t actually faithful to the grandiosity of the genre. Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the movie bet on a cast with outstanding figures of the cinema – like Susan Sarandon – and new prominent actors, such as the Netflix star, Xolo Maridueña.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Blue Beetle’s plot is focused on the story of Jaime Rayes – freshly graduated from the Gotham law school – who, upon returning to his hometown, gets in touch with a highly powerful biotechnical scarab that was under the ownership of Kord Industries. That’s how he turns into the Blue Beetle, an armour-plated blue avenger, and we can credit this to Jenny Kord – aka Bruna Marquezine. He and his family will have to fight with Sarandon’s (Victoria Kord) army to not let her use this technology for evil reasons. Lucky for them, Grandma Nana has a revolutionary past (“Abajo los imperialistas!” – as she said)!

The movie itself is full of superhero movies’ clichés, and some jokes were a little silly sometimes. But it doesn’t affect the Blue Beetle story, since the plot secured the public’s attention in a fun and joyful story. Unlike anything ever seen in this universe, the production brought the strength of Latin culture and the union of the Reyes’ family with a lot of Latin references and jokes, of course. The kids and even the adults will have a soft and enjoyable moment at the theater with Blue Beetle.

However, for the superhero lovers, the CGI and special effects did not stand out. But, definitely, this DC’s production conquers for the representativeness and delivers to the public a lot of personality.

Latin representativeness for Brazilians

It is not common to see Latin elements in Hollywood movies. In Blue Beetle, some of them were stereotypical – of course – but we have to give credit to what they were trying to do! Approaching it, in a superhero movie, is standard-breaking.

Many Brazilians do not see themselves as Latinos. But the references – such as movies, songs, telenovelas and daily customs – were impossible not to identify with or understand it. And this proximity is enhanced with Marquezine’s presence. She even had a Portuguese line on the big screen!

Blue Beetle divided the public’s opinion. It is not a big classic and full of reflection. But it’s full of fun and comedy moments – with a lot of action! So, if you are looking for a soft and enjoyable movie, definitely you should give a shot for Reyes’s adventure in the theaters. And prepare yourself because – as we can see in the post-credits scenes – it’s not time to say goodbye to Blue Beetle!
