One of the most famous  and recognized awards in the music industry, the Latin Grammy 2023, announced the nominees for the prize on September 19th. Even though some Brazilian musicians were included in the list, the productions from the country didn’t show up as a strong presence among the candidates names again.

Brazil is the only Latin country that has Portuguese as its official language. This fact, besides the variety of the types of music, can be the cause that these artists are not as appreciated as the others in LATAM. Perhaps to fill the purpose of diversity, the organization has some categories just for songs in Portuguese, and, this year, they added one more: Best Portuguese-Language Urban Performance.

“Our priority is to effectively represent all the Latin music creators that we serve”, said Manuel Abud, the CEO of The Latin Recording Academy.

An amount of categories involves more than Portuguese songs, but Brazilian artists don’t show up as possible winners in that. In the category “Record of The Year”, for instance, the nominees don’t include Brazilian tracks:

1.  “No Es Que Te Extrañe”, by Christina Aguilera;

2. “Carretera y Manta”, by Pabló Alboran;

3. “Déjame Llorarte”, by Paula Arenas featuring Jesús Navarro;

4,  “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”, by Bizarrap featuring Shakira;

5. “Si Tú Me Quieres”, by Fonseca & Juan Luis Guerra;

6. “Mientras Me Curo Del Cora”, by  Karol G;

7.”De Todas Las Flores”, by Natalia Lafourcade;

8.”Ojos Marrones”; by Lasso;

9. “La Fórmula”, by Maluma & Marc Anthony;

10. “Despechá”, by Rosalía.

11. “Correcaminos”, by Alejandro Sanz Featuring Danny Ocean.

Brazilian artists are not in any of the other main categories too, like “Album of The Year”, “Song of The Year” and “Best Pop Song”.

Brazilian Musicians Nominated for the Latin Grammy 2023

Natasha FalcĂŁo, 35, was nominated for “Best New Artist”. The singer of the album “Ave Mulher” is one of the Brazilian artists that made out of the Portuguese Language’s exclusive categories.

The Brazilian songwriter Andreas Kisser, with Andrés Giménez, is in the list by “Best Rock Song”, and Mauro Senise and Cristóvão Bastos are in “Best Instrumental Album”.

In Portuguese Language categories, Marília Mendonça, IZA, João Gomes and Chitãozinho & Xororó, Melim, Thiaguinho and Jorge & Mateus are some of the professionals that are in the list.

Brazilian Winners of the Latin Grammy

Although this unappreciation has been a common scenario over the past years, a few Brazilians did win gramophone. Xuxa, known by “Rainha dos Baixinhos” (The Queen of Children), won not just one, but two times the award: in 2002 and 2003  for “Best Latin Children´s Album”.

Besides her, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Monte, Ana VitĂłria, JoĂŁo Gilberto, Roberto Carlos, ChitĂŁozinho & XororĂł and Adriana Calcanhotto can also be quoted.

Last year, 2022, Ludmilla was appreciated by Numanice #2 album and won the prize in “Best Samba/ Pagode Album“, and Liniker in “Best MPB Album”.

Anitta was nominated in some categories in the past, but didn’t win any of them. In 2023, she wasn’t even in the list, which outraged fans.

The Latin Grammy 2023 will happen on November 16 in Seville, Spain.
