Good Dishes to Make for Thanksgiving

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Green Bean Casserole: This is one of my favorite dishes that my mom has made for every single Thanksgiving that I can remember. It is pretty simple to make and it takes under an hour to cook. I know this dish can be pretty controversial because you either love it or you hate it, but I have always loved this dish. I recommend that you try it even if people say bad things about it because we all have different tastes. Maybe your mom hates it, but you may love it. You never know unless you try and it is definitely something you should try in your lifetime. This year is the perfect year to try it!

Sweet Potato Casserole: This has been another one of my favorite dishes for a while. My favorite part is the gooey marshmallow top. It goes so well with the sweet potato, and when it is all together in your mouth, it is such a yummy combination. This dish is fairly simple as well, but it does take a little more time compared to some of the other dishes. The time it takes is so worth it though because I like how it brings sweetness to a dish of mostly savory foods. I would highly recommend trying some version of this dish as well.

Butternut Squash: I have never really cared for this side dish until the more recent years as I have gotten older. Sometimes it can be a little too much with sweet potato casserole because they are kind of similar in texture and sweetness. Sometimes my family makes both, but sometimes we make one or the other. It is really up to you and how much sweetness and starchiness you want with your Thanksgiving meal. Again, this is an acquired taste so I would recommend it if you are not picky, but if you are, you may not like the texture. I would always recommend that you try at least a small bite if it is an option though!

Cranberry Sauce: This has always been a staple food in my Thanksgiving meals. I love cranberry sauce almost more than green bean casserole. This is a dish that is high on my list of favorite foods. The texture can be iffy for some people, but even though I typically have a texture issue when I eat certain foods, this dish gives me no problems. This dish is very sweet and it adds a nice, almost healthier component to the meal. I prefer the jellied kind over the chunky kind, but many people like both! I know most people have tried this at least once but if you have not, I say go for it.

Chocolate Cream Pie: Last but not least is one of my favorite desserts of all time. I know people may not think of a chocolate cream pie as a Thanksgiving pie, but my family has always loved this type of pie, so we have just started incorporating it into our Thanksgiving dessert list. I normally do not eat much pie after my meal because we all know that about-to-pop feeling that we get after the big meal. However, I eat a lot of it later when I start getting slightly hungry again. The cream is the best part, in my opinion. Again, I highly recommend this as a dessert for any occasion, especially if you have never had it before.

Author’s Note: Thank you for reading my article. I wanted to write about something that was relevant and that reminded me of fall. What better to do than suggest Thanksgiving dishes? I hope this can give you some new ideas on what to make or try, or even just remind you that these are options for your meal! If you try any of these, I hope you enjoy them a lot. Again, thank you for reading, and enjoy your Thanksgiving no matter what it may look like. If you do not celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you have good meals and relaxation!

I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend as well as my friends and family. I have a cat names Max. My favorite hobby is going shopping.
