Who are Olivia and Lunden?
Olivia and Lunden are a popular lesbian couple on TikTok. The 26-year-old couple posts videos ranging from their wedding planning, wedding cake tastings, outfits, dates, and other different lifestyle content on their profile. People gravitated toward them because of their âunproblematic energyâ and unique way of showing their gay pride in a preppy southern area.Â
Given how loved they are on social media the information that made it into the news shocked many. They got married on October 1, 2023, only to find themselves in hot water when old tweets of Lundenâs had resurfaced using racial slurs. There were a startling number of screenshots, but it is hard to say how many due to them being deleted off any social media platforms.Â
So What Happened?
A Reddit thread emerged of Lunden casually using racial slurs in tweets stretching from 2012 through 2014. Along with the screenshots being removed from any social media platforms, Lunden also deactivated her twitter account. She explained why she deactivated her Twitter account and said that it was not to hide what she had said, but because the tweets âshould have never been said,â and she did not want more people to âsee them and get offended and hurt.â
Along with her history on social media, some Reddit users noticed the location of their wedding and dug a little deeper. The coupleâs wedding was held at Naylor Hall, it was built in the 1800s by one of the townâs founders for the bookkeeper of a textile company. These mills were among the most successful in Georgia. They were a leading provider of goods to the Confederacy during the Civil War. Some history about the town says that there was a secret stash of confederate uniforms manufactured by the homeownerâs mills during the Civil War. The home was heavily damaged by Union attacks and was rebuilt after the war. It was not technically a plantation, though some records state that the owner, Hugh Proudfoot, was a slave owner.
How did Lunden respond?
Lunden and Olivia posted a ten-minute apology video together conveying their profound guilt. They are clearly on their honeymoon from the look of the outfits they are wearing in the video. Lunden said,â Iâm completely and utterly disgusted and ashamed and honestly embarrassed how normal it was for me to speak that way on Twitter, and for my friends and I to address each other that way or for me to sing along in rap songs.â Some viewers did not agree with how she called it ânormalâ for her to be using these words. They were displeased when the video was posted on the couple’s TikTok story that is not going to permanently show on their profile.Â
Are they canceled?
The newlyweds took a break from posting for a few weeks after they posted their apology video, but they recently started posting again and most comments are not what you might expect. People are welcoming them back and saying that they missed their content. Under the video they posted when the tweets were released, people were appalled and upset. It seems like most people have put it past them, but if it were anyone else would they have been held accountable for longer?Â
