Spotify was at the top of everyone’s minds — and social media feeds — this week, as the music streaming service released their annual Spotify Wrapped, a collection of their users’ top songs, albums, and artists over the past year. Many people were shocked and delighted to find out who took their No. 1 spot on the app over the last year. With so many new artists and albums debuting, it’s pretty easy to gather up thousands of minutes worth of listening to your favorite songs. Whether you’re the designated aux holder during long road trips or perhaps you’re in charge of the music at your sorority’s day party, Spotify has always supplied the tunes and vibes for every occasion!
This musical app is constantly changing and adding fun features to Wrapped, and this year they did that! “Me in 2023” is a great new feature from Spotify, which features 12 distinctly different personalities based on your listening habits. If you’re always jumping from artist to artist (like me), you might’ve gotten the Shapeshifter personality, which means you’ve got an eclectic mix of musicians you love to listen to. Or if you’ve got love for just one genre or artist, you might’ve gotten the Cyclops personality — you’ve only one eye when it comes to your music!
But that’s not all. This year, Spotify gave Her Campus some exclusive data to share with readers. The streaming service gave us data on the top artists and songs among four college campuses from around the country, where some of the top Her Campus chapters are located. It’s like a mini Wrapped for your school! This data shows how users in the zip codes where these colleges are located listened. From SZA to Taylor Swift, our readers and campus chapters have been locked and loaded with the most elite musical taste. Here’s the data we got for four college campuses — Florida State University, Texas A&M, University of Colorado Boulder, and the University of Connecticut — and our Her Campus chapters’ take on the results!

I see you FSU! This list is pretty sturdy, containing a good balance of feel-good,party music and the revengeful ex-ballad by SZA. However, some students at FSU were confused that their fan-fave, Noah Kahan, didn’t appear on the list. Sophomore Hannah Grinbank says, “I’m surprised Noah Kahan isn’t on the list since he performed a concert here in October.” Some HC at FSU members, like junior Lexi Tulowitzki and sophomore Dulce Ordonez, say the same about Olivia Rodrigo, who was missing from the data. Grinbank also says, “These do a good job representing some of the main campus groups: girlypop, country fan, frat boy, and people with taste (SZA).”

Texas A&M is holding down the Taylor Swift fort! Halee Decker, a junior at TAMU, says, “I do feel that my music is accurately represented with this list. As a Swiftie, I am not surprised that Taylor Swift is No. 1 (biased yes, but that’s where she should be as the top global artist), but I am surprised that there aren’t more country songs or artists on this list. A large group of my friends listen to rap, so I do see why there are quite a few artists in that genre in this list.”

UC Boulder is ranked as one of the top party schools in the country, and their musical choices are reflective of that! Genevieve Andersen, Campus Correspondent at Her Campus CU Boulder explains, though, that most of the music that students listen to on her campus is male-dominated. “We thought it was sad that only two women were in the top artists, but Taylor Swift was no surprise. Overall, it looks like the frat boy, upper-class male culture was overrepresented in these results, and the rock-climber/hiker/outdoorsy culture was underrepresented,” she says.
Though UC Boulder is a “party school,” many students, like Andersen, wished for more genre inclusivity, saying, “We were confused on the lack of indie/granola music, beyond Noah Kahan and Luke Combs, because this is a large part of CU culture as well.” Andersen also shared how members of Her Campus at CU Boulder felt about the song rankings, saying, “0% of them thought CU’s results were representative of their music interests, and 70% of them thought it was representative of CU as a whole.”

Michelle Loo, a senior at UConn, says the campus vibe is heavily represented through these rankings. “A lot of chill songs from the top five can be represented by the student population while walking around on campus or studying,” Loo says. “The last three songs can be represented by UConn winning the fifth NCAA men’s basketball national championship. These songs represent hype and excitement for the team.”
