4 R&B Albums that Scratch My Brain Just Right this Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

The colder weather calls for a playlist to match the winter vibes. Let me help you romanticize your day with these four satisfying R&B albums!

3 of Us – FLO

3 of Us is technically an EP, but I had to include it because it is way too good if you like sassy-Destiny’s-Child type of music. It has a gorgeous crisp texture, heavenly harmonies, and an R&B soul tone that melts into the ears. The album’s combination of feminine and soulful elements makes it perfect for hyping yourself up in the morning while getting ready and going for coffee before your first class of the day!

Indigo – RM of BTS

Indigo is an absolute masterpiece, in my opinion. It is a collection of RM’s emotional journey throughout the years and how he has learned to let go of regrets, milk as much joy and knowledge from life as possible, and embrace whatever stage he finds himself in.

The album blends rap, pop, and R&B to create a unique mix of moods and artistic sounds – not to mention that the lyricism is insanely amazing (look up a translation). The title track “Wild Flower” is my favorite, with “Yun,” “No. 2,” and “Closer” coming in second. If you read any translations, please read that one and listen to how the music explodes and freely flows. You can tell that RM really poured his soul into this album. I could go into how much I appreciate the meaning and musicality of the album, but that would be a whole other article, so I will stop there.

On that note, RM’s Indigo is perfect for a cute café study session, a walk around a park or museum, or a relaxing session reading a book, painting, or crocheting.

Back of My Mind – H.E.R.

H.E.R.’s Back of My Mind has a smoother texture than other albums on this list. It is about vulnerability and quieting the outside noise (e.g., external pressures, judgements, etc.). The music has a beautiful, ethereal, continuous flow that emphasizes the album’s meaning and makes each song very pleasing to the ear. I feel like I’m getting a brain massage every time I listen to it; it feels calming and helps clear my mind, which I think is genius. This album is great for winding down after a busy day, perhaps in a comfy sweater with the cool outside breeze.

Layover – V of BTS

Layover is all about transitioning into a new era, leaving certain things behind, and looking forward, so it is fitting as we enter the fall season. V’s soulful voice paired with the music’s slow R&B pop sounds and grainy textures hit the spot on a cozy evening wrapped in blankets and sipping on a hot beverage.
