OK, fine, I’ll admit it. I’m in love with Renee Rapp. The singer has taken the world by storm this year. Rapp has teamed up with the hot girl coach Megan Thee Stallion to make a baddie anthem we’ll all fall in love with. “Not My Fault” is the first track to be released from the highly-anticipated new Mean Girls movie musical, out on Jan. 12, 2024. The “Not My Fault” lyrics are full of confidence, and such a fun track to introduce people to this new era of the fan-favorite film.
Tina Fey, writer of the original Mean Girls movie and the Broadway musical, wanted to have the best of both worlds with this new version. She told fans to expect “great music, new jokes, and the look to be updated but also nods to the original” in a Dec. 13 video for Rotten Tomatoes. Rapp said, “20 years later, it’s just as poppin’ as it was when it came out.” The comedy is timeless, and growing up loving the film and being a fan of the Broadway show, I can’t wait to see the new movie. “It’s hot,” Rapp said in the Rotten Tomatoes video, and so is “Not My Fault.” It’s a fun new take on the classic “Mean Girls” vibe that shows fans what they can expect from the 2024 version. Here are the lyrics to “Not My Fault” explained, so all the hotties can sing along and get excited for the film.
The song starts with the iconic quote, “You know what? It’s not my fault you’re, like, in love with me or something!” Then immediately goes into the catchy chorus. “You came with her but she might leave with me. It’s not my fault. You’ve gotta pay for what I get for free.” Clearly, Rapp is embodying her iconic character, Regina George. She can’t help that she’s the coolest person in the room. Confidence is free, and she has it unapologetically.
The first verse mocks questions people ask about the It Girl. “Where she at? What she doin’? Who she with and where she from?” The queen bee is back and tired of the talk. “Told you who I am and what it is, that’s not my fault.” They all knew who she was, so they can’t blame her for being herself. “Kiss a blonde (Kiss a blonde), kiss a friend (OK). Can a gay girl get an, ‘Amen?’ Amen.” This is the queer anthem fans didn’t know they needed.
Megan Thee Stallion comes on the track and slays. “I mean, who wouldn’t wanna be in love with me? (Love with me). I’m a mood, borin’ wh*res gotta Pinterest me.” She’s a trendsetter and an inspiration, especially to her haters. “But I been told y’all, I’m the Black Regina George. Bikini top, booty shorts, Megan-core.” OK, I might steal this line for my Insta caption. I’ll be in “Megan-core” all 2024. “I woke up hotter than I was yesterday, don’t care about no rules ’cause I always get my way.” This is the new hot girl mantra.
This song is so Regina George-coded. It perfectly introduces fans to this new era of Mean Girls, and I’m so here for it. Don’t blame me for how I act when I hear this song in theaters — it’s “Not My Fault” it’s such a bop.
