Before coming to campus, one of the biggest things I was advised to do in order to kick-start my college life was to join a student organization. I was told it would be a great way to stay involved and feel a part of a community. Fortunately for me, I was able to find an organization I’m proud to call home within the Greek Life community.

Upon my arrival to Michigan State University’s campus, I immediately wanted to join lots of clubs. I was thrilled about the club fair being held and was super pumped to join organizations related to my major. I had a decent experience. I was passionate about the clubs I did join, and didn’t mind going to meetings. However, I believed something was missing. I met a number of friendly and like-minded people, but I felt like I hadn’t found my community.

Going through formal sorority recruitment was one of the best things I’ve done for myself while being on campus. Although the process was rocky and is certainly easy, it brought me to find my best friends and a place where I can truly be my best self. Looking back, I wish I could tell my past self how good it’s going to get and how thankful I am for sticking with the recruitment process.

My sorority has definitely brought me some of my very best friends. Although I am so lucky to have found these girls, I realize this isn’t the case for everyone right off the bat. Finding your bridesmaids isn’t the only benefit of joining a sorority, and is in fact only the surface level. I’ve been so fortunate to have so many opportunities of running for positions and holding leadership positions. Even as a new member, applying for positions is encouraged, and you’re able to run an entire aspect of your sorority. It’s been amazing to watch my friends do what they’re passionate about within our organization, and as a result have something great to put on their resumes.

All sororities on campus have philanthropy. Philanthropy is great because you’re able to have fun and be surrounded by your sorority sisters, but also raise money and support local and national charities. It helps you become passionate about something you may not have known about before, and gives everyone the ability to help out different communities. It’s the heart of a sorority and is something everyone can feel connected to.

If you couldn’t already tell, I am a big fan of Greek Life. If you’re on the fence of joining a sorority or are looking for reasons to, I’m hoping to have convinced at least one person. There is a place for everyone, and I hope every girl is able to find a community they feel loved and supported in.
