When it comes to student safety, universities are often funding ill-equipped resources in order to check off a mandatory box. This is one reason that Flare was founded.

Brought to life by three students from the University of Cambridge, Flare is an emergency SOS app designed to aid student safety on campus and beyond. With the touch of a button, Flare allows you to send a pre-written text message to a number of your choice, allowing anyone who feels that they’re in an unsafe situation to let their friends and family know instantly. Messages are completely customisable and are super easy to send, with a simple tap of the lock screen.

“Our hope is that Flare can give students and young people an added layer of confidence and security when they’re out and about on campus. We feel that Universities can often treat safety and wellbeing as a checkbox exercise. By drawing on the perspectives and ideas of our many student partners, Flare is designed to genuinely provide young people with a free, easy-to-use tool that’s all about making the most of their time at university.”

Gabriel Brown, Morgan Saville and Geno Racklin Asher, Co-Founders of Flare

The need for safety on campus is ever present, with the University of Bristol’s student newspaper Epigram reporting that only one third of students trust campus security to keep them safe. With Flare, students can feel more in control of their own safety and can put their trust into people they know and choose. The app offers that extra peace of mind for those who may feel vulnerable on campus.
