Growing up in Ottawa, I constantly hear complaints that there is nothing fun to do in this city. However, being Canada’s Capital, there are many notable locations like the National War Memorial, the statue of Terry Fox, Parliament Hill Buildings, The Supreme Court of Canada, and the National Gallery of Canada, to name a few. Of course, these are places that everyone should visit at least once while living in the city. But in terms of “fun” activities with friends, Ottawa has gotten a bad rep. Don’t get me wrong, it can become pretty lively with a variety of festivals, events, and diverse experiences all around the city. For the times when you’re stuck and looking for something new to do with friends or family, here is your 3-tiered guide to some fun whereabouts in Ottawa!
Level One Game Pub
This first location is a place that I recently discovered just this month, and it’s safe to say it will be one of my new go-to spots for a date night or with friends! Level One Game Pub is located at 14 Waller St, and it has every board game you can think of! My favourites are Guess Who, Operation, Scrabble, and Battleship. I like sticking to the classics with board games, but there are endless walls filled with a large variety if you want to try something new. There is a “stay and play” fee of CAD 9.00 to enter, which isn’t too bad considering they have 1300+ board games and 1000+ video games to choose from! And of course, they have a great food and drink menu, so what more can you ask for? This will become your favourite spot if you love a good board game, which, let’s be honest, who doesn’t?
D Spot Dessert Café Kanata
This café just came to Ottawa a few months ago, as it was originally founded in Scarborough, Ontario. With over 200+ menu items ranging from waffles to nachos, there is something for every type of craving. I recommend getting any of the waffles, since they are perfectly cooked and have various toppings to choose from! With the location being at 790 Kanata Ave, Unit M1A, it is one of the few desert places open till midnight on weekdays, and 2:00 am on weekends in the Kanata area! If you plan on trying this place out, be prepared to be super full.
Skating on the Rideau Canal
Its tiiiiiiiiimeeee! The reputable Rideau Canal just recently opened to the public for the first time since 2022! If you did not already know, the Rideau Canal is the largest skateway in Canada, so it is a must-visit site for sure. With a beavertail stand right on the ice, you can enjoy a yummy Canadian treat while skating with your loved ones. Make sure to go before it closes for the season!
