Our beloved Seminole Football season is over, and you’re probably just waiting for the fall to roll around to show off your garnet and gold outfits once again. Well, I’m here to remind you all that other sports exist!
In the fall semester, each week thousands of students fight to get their free tickets to cheer on the Seminoles at Doak. But ever since that emotional last game in November (you know, the one where our favorite superstar Jordan Travis was carted off the field), it seems that we’ve all forgotten about our other athletes.
I don’t know if it’s the frigid Florida winter (it’s 50 degrees most days), but I think we could all show up for our basketball teams more. The Donald L. Tucker Civic Center is only a short walk from campus and College Town, so there really shouldn’t be any excuses! I’ll even give you a cheat sheet for our teams that are making waves this season.
the men’s team
To start with our men’s team, there have definitely been ups and downs this season. Unfortunately, the men’s team is not ranked, but we’ve had some big wins, including a victory over the then-ranked Colorado Buffaloes. Up until Jan. 20, after suffering a loss to Clemson, the men were running on a five-game win streak. That includes beating our rival down south, UMiami, and I’m sure that’s something we can all get on board with.
I’ve been to a few men’s games this season and they are a lot of fun! Although there aren’t tailgates and block parties like there are for football games, I still showed up in my FSU apparel and participated in the war chant numerous times, and I know that’s something we’ve all been missing.
the women’s team
As for our women’s team, they’ve seen more success than the men’s team. We’re currently sitting at No. 23 in the country after an upset loss to Virginia and a loss against Duke. However, these women have been showing up all season with impressive wins over higher-ranked teams like Virginia Tech and UNC.
This team is fun to watch, too. They’re speedy and scrappy, everything you want out of a basketball game. These women know how to score quickly and effectively, running laps around their opponents. I can confidently say they’ll get their ranking back up after a few more wins.
what’s next?
The Tuck is a beautiful venue that holds up to 12,500 people. However, in the few games I’ve been to, the student section was at about half capacity with the rest of the venue nowhere near full. The basketball teams need and deserve our support!
The men are hosting Virginia on Feb. 10, and the highly ranked Duke team on Feb. 17. Come out on Feb. 4 to see the women take on our rivals UMiami, and again on Feb. 11 to watch them play Notre Dame. Let’s pack the Tuck!
We all know the spring semester can be… long. So, if you’re a sports fanatic like me, or are just looking for things to do this spring, remember our Seminole athletes! If basketball isn’t your thing, you can’t say no to baseball and softball. Spend a couple of hours outside, sit in the sun, and support our Noles!
