Going to the gym is daunting, especially if you have never been before. It is completely understandable if going to the gym is a terrifying thought; however, I am here to assure you that there is nothing to worry about and give you some tips on how to start lifting. Â
Trust me, no one is judging you
Everybody at the gym is there for their benefit. Most people have their headphones on and are focusing on themselves. No one is going to care what you are doing or judge you for not lifting hundreds of pounds because everybody was a beginner once as well.Â
Go with a friend
When I first started going to the gym in 2020, I went with my dad. He is an experienced weightlifter, so he was able to show me what to do and how to have correct form. Find a friend or relative who has experience with lifting and ask if they can show you the basics.Â
Another option is to find a friend who also wants to start lifting and help each other start out. Going with another person gives you a support system and a way to block out the other people at the gym.
Form > everything
Having the correct form is super important because it prevents injury. You can find tutorials for any exercise imaginable on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and even Pinterest.Â
Don’t get caught up in trying to lift as much as you can. Start off with light weights and make sure you have perfected your form before moving on to heavier weights.Â
Develop a plan
I recommend developing a plan on what exercises or muscle groups you plan to hit during your gym session. I like to look at gym influencers’ workout plans on TikTok or Instagram and go from there.Â

Go into it with a positive mindset
I have always seen working out as an outlet that allows me to get all my stress out. I find that picturing the gym as an outlet and not a chore keeps me consistent and excited to get my workout in. Find a way that going to the gym is exciting for you and keep telling yourself that. Tell yourself positive affirmations or make a vision board that romanticizes going to the gym.
