The Perfect Love Songs to Add to Your Valentine’s Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s nothing I love more than some good love songs. No matter how you celebrate, these can surely help you get into that sappy, lovey-dovey mood!

OVER THE RAINBOW BY HARRY NILSSON

Starting off with a swoon! This beautiful cover of the classic song by Israel KamakawiwoŹ»ole always gets me in a heartfelt mood. From the flute to the strings, it reminds me of springtime and it’s just so warm and happy, it’s impossible not to smile at. Fun fact, this song plays at the end of You’ve Got Mail, which is one of my all-time favorite movies. It just makes this song that much more special for me. (By the way, that movie is wonderful, and absolutely perfect for this time of year. Absolutely recommend it!)

ANNIE’S SONG BY JOHN DENVER

Now, if you know me, you know I love my folk music. This is the quintessential acoustic love song! John Denver wrote this for his first wife, Annie Martell (which is such a sad fact, but let’s ignore the fact that they were divorced and just focus on this wonderful song.) Simply describing this as a “love song” feels reductive. It’s a love letter, I would argue. And not just the lyrics are beautiful, but the instrumentals are something I could listen to happily for the rest of my life, I think.

ANDANTE, ANDANTE BY ABBA

ABBA is known for their upbeat, happy disco music, and this song could not be a more lovely mix between that and love song. The lyrics are sweet and heartfelt, and the music is so perfect for slow dancing, but also for tapping your toe too! ABBA has so many great love songs, but I think that this one is one of my favorites. And, if you want to get into the band beyond what’s on their Gold album, then I definitely recommend this one.

Glue SONG (FEAT. CLAIRO) BY BEABADOOBEE

Getting more modern now! This song came out about a year now, and there are two versions of it, one with Clairo and one without. They’re both equally as lovely, but the Clairo version is personally my favorite. She and Bea’s vocals are so beautiful together! This is the definition of a love songā€”a slow, melodic tempo, vibrato vocals, and sweet lyrics that make your heart melt. Every time I listen to this song, I fall more and more in love with it. Maybe I should get a Valentine’s card for it?

DON’T DELETE THE KISSES BY WOLF ALICE

This song is the perfect personification of what it feels like to fall in love. And this one tells a story! We get to sing along with the artist as she develops a crush and the stages that follow it. Her vocals are so ethereal and the music is so upbeat, it makes me want to just jump up and down while screaming the lyrics (and if you’re in the market for a good song to drive to with the windows down, this one is a perfect contender.)
