My Foolproof Makeup Routine for Going Out in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brown chapter.

While I like to experiment with TikTok makeup trends just as much as the next girl, I am the kind of person who honors my tried and true products, tricks, and routines, especially when I am getting ready to go out with my friends or boyfriend. Going out makeup is, in my opinion, the hardest to perfect because you want to look effortlessly beautiful without sweating your face off halfway through the night. My go-to routine and tricks will keep you looking perfect while you dance the night away!

Step 1: Skincare

The key to any good makeup is a good base (aka skincare). You always want to apply makeup to freshly washed and moisturized skin. I’d avoid using any harsh or super strong products for this step because they may not react well with your makeup. Feel free to use your own products but my favorites for this step are the Peace out Blemish Balm cleanser and the Dry Skin Cream from Ponds

Step 2: Base

You may want to switch this step with your eye makeup if you’re planning on using a lot of eyeshadow or other products, but I like to do my base first to make sure it has the longest time to set. I always start with a long-lasting primer (like the Pore Filler from NYX). I’d recommend using a mattifying or long-lasting primer over a dewy one for your going out makeup to maximize wear time. Next, I typically use a tinted moisturizer or BB cream for the next step. I dab it all over my face with dots and then I blend it in with a beauty blender. You may also sub in with a more full-coverage product during this step. Then, I use concealer on my under eyes and on any blemishes. I always keep the concealer on, unblended, for 2-3 minutes to maximize coverage and usually continue my makeup routine while it sets. Then, I blend it in with a beauty blender that has some setting powder on it.

Step 3: Blush, Bronze, Contour

Once your base is set, it is time to go in with blush, bronzer, contour, and highlight, or whichever combination of those products suit your fancy. I typically stick to blush, bronzer, and contour. The key to this step is to use both cream and powder products. I always do my cream products first. Then, I go in and set with powdered versions of those products. That will ensure your face makeup stays set the entire night! Once I finish blushing, bronzing, and contouring, I set my face with both setting powder and setting spray.

Step 4: Eyes

My eyes are my favorite feature, so I always choose to highlight them in my makeup routines. For my eye routine, I begin by using a small pointed brush to smudge a light brown eyeshadow across my lower lash line (I use the shade Kano in the Warrior Palette by Juvia’s Place palette). Next, I deepen the color in the outer corners of my lower lash line with a darker brown (I use Mino from the same palette). Next, I go in with brown eyeliner (I use the shade Burnt Sienna from NYX) on my waterline and bring it out into a small wing following my lower lash line. I then use my brush or fingers to smudge it out as needed. Finally, I curl my eyelashes with an eyelash curler (don’t skip this step, it’s a game changer) and apply my favorite drugstore mascara (Lash Sensational by Maybelline).

Step 5: Lips

My lip combo is super simple, but I believe that it is necessary to balance out the eye and the makeup on the rest of my face. I usually begin by lining my lips and then adding a cream lipstick and a gloss then blotting. However, if I want to keep it extra simple, I usually just line my lips and add a gloss. Make sure to bring your gloss with you so you can reapply throughout the night.

Try this look out and allow yourself to be wowed by the results!
