2024 is already shaping up to be a big year for movies. For musical fans, the live action adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked has been highly anticipated for years. Popular musicals becoming major Hollywood productions is a common endeavor, but with how loved Wicked is, it is expected that this release feels a little bit different than others.
The first-look trailer for the movie was revealed on February 11. Aside from a few stills that came out last year and pictures taken on set during filming, this trailer marks the beginning of promotion for the first part of Wicked that is due to be released at the end of this year. Additionally, this trailer further confirms the decision to split the musical into two with a second movie coming out in the fall of 2025.
In the minute long preview, viewers are introduced to iconic main characters Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) as well as the world building of Oz. It is evident that the film will rely on a bright color scheme, with the two main leads being depicted through the greens and pinks that are so closely connected to their characterization. While the two might begin the story as rivals, their friendship is at the heart and it is already clear Erivo and Grande will have wonderful chemistry.
Another key element of the trailer is the strong allusions to the original Broadway musical in addition to the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This upcoming movie would not exist without the source material that had been widely respected in popular culture for years. It is exciting to see a refreshing take on what has become a classic story and this trailer is only the start of a two-year journey for these movies.
