Selena Gomez is back with new music as well as a new music video, and I couldn’t be happier. On Feb. 15, Gomez announced her new single, “Love On,” which was released on Feb. 22, and I’m already obsessed.
Gomez’s “Love On” music video gives major Monte Carlo vibes. Yes, I’m talking about the iconic 2011 film Monte Carlo starring Gomez, Leighton Meester, and Katie Cassidy. In the “Love On” MV, it seems that Gomez is paying homage to her Monte Carlo era with the outfits, filming locations, and overall vibe of the MV.
If you’re unfamiliar with Monte Carlo, allow me to fill you in. Monte Carlo follows best friends Grace (Selena Gomez) and Emma (Katie Cassidy) who quit their waitressing jobs and head to Paris for a summer adventure. On the trip, they are accompanied by Meg (Leighton Meester), Grace’s stepsister. They go on a prepackaged trip which is not up to par with their expectations, but things quickly change when Grace is mistaken for a British socialite named Cordelia, which leads her, Emma, and Meg to Monte Carlo to enjoy a week of yacht parties and fun. They think they are in the clear, until the real Cordelia shows up.
The music video begins with various couples kissing each other, and the camera then pans to Gomez, who is seen wearing a bright pink dress while holding a dog. Looks like she is waiting for the right time to “turn her love on.”
The most Monte Carlo moment comes from the scenes where Gomez is sitting in a white robe, wearing sunglasses with her hair in a towel looking out the balcony of a gorgeous hotel room. If this doesn’t scream Monte Carlo, I don’t know what does.
The other outfits and locations throughout the MV reminded me so much of all the adventures and fun that happens in Monte Carlo, so it was great to see the video representing one Gomez’s most iconic movies.
While Gomez has not taken an official hiatus from music, she’s not making as much music as she used to. But that doesn’t mean that she’s been up to nothing. Of course, Rare Beauty has been one of Gomez’s primary focuses over the past few years, but she’s also continuing to do something she loves, which is acting. If you have yet to catch Selener in Only Murderers In The Building on Hulu, you’re missing out! Despite all this, music continues to be something she loves to do, and I’m so happy she’s releasing new stuff.
I’m not sure what’s next for Gomez and her music career, but I’m hoping that she continues to pay homage to her Monte Carlo era, because TBH, it’s so iconic.
