With winter’s long hold on us seemingly finally coming to an end, spring can signal many new beginnings, with the literal meaning being that everything is being reborn. Many of us may have longingly awaited spring’s return, as winter is not the easiest season for many.

According to Appalachian State University, 25% of college students struggle with seasonal depression. With this, some lingering negative feelings from winter may unintentionally carry forth into the new season. My suggestion? Utilize this new beginning to rid yourself of any lingering feelings and allow yourself to fully indulge in this new, longingly awaited time of opportunity.

Self-care and mindfulness should be a top priority regardless of the season. Because we all only have one mind and body, it is a necessity to take care of it. Self-care can be something as small as a facemask and watching a movie after a long day or a meticulously integrated habit to better yourself and life in the long run.

Nevertheless, taking care of oneself is crucial, and the overall concept of “bettering oneself” may seem quite daunting. Many often do so much for others and subsequently put their needs on the back burner. Here are five mindfulness and self-care tips that can help set you up for success this spring!

1. Spring cleaning

Take the time to refresh your dorm, apartment, car, or room. Donating old clothes, books, and getting rid of old makeup makes you feel more tidy and allows you to refresh your wardrobe or makeup routine.

2. walk through nature

Take a brisk, mindful nature walk while listening to your favorite album or podcast. According to Medium, it is necessary to spend twenty minutes at least three times a week. The Bay Area has a lot to offer, as it is known for its scenic views. Anyone from beginners to experts can partake. San Jose, specifically, has a plethora of hiking trails, such as Almaden Lake Park, Coyote Creek Trail, and Guadalupe River Park Trail.

3. revamp your beauty routine

Look at your current skincare and makeup routine. You can declutter or shift your products for the new season. For skincare, use a lighter moisturizer and then a high-SPF sunscreen. For more spring makeup, you can change from mattes and powders to dewy and cream products for a brighter skin finish.

4. gratitude list

Write a list of things that you are grateful for. This can be however long or short as you like. Write about the people, places, experiences, and things you are grateful for. A gratitude list often allows you to shift your perspective onto the positive things and helps you become more grounded and intentional in your life.

5. prioritize your sleep schedule

With the bustle of college life, between lectures, extracurricular activities, work, and maintaining a social life, many students unfortunately sacrifice their sleep schedule. With the nights being shorter, getting eight to nine hours of sleep every night is more crucial than ever. Implement tactics like organizing your schedule so you’re not up late cramming homework or a project. Having a calming night routine where you eliminate “doom scrolling” will result in better sleep

Whether you choose to use one or all five ways to care for yourself, self-care and mindfulness are always a good use of time. What is a way you take care of yourself? Let us know @HerCampusSJSU.
