Selena Gomez & Me: Unraveling Our Complicated Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Selena Gomez holds a special place in my heart, just like any other Disney girl. From the enchanting days of Wizards of Waverly Place to her underrated gem”‘Fetish”, her journey has been a hurricane of nostalgia and inspiration. Yet, lately, I’ve been feeling a bit iffy about where I stand with her. As the self-proclaimed queen of celebrity gossip, join me for a chat as I dish on Selena’s recent (and not-so-recent) controversial moments, sharing my honest take on her ever-evolving story.

Before we dive in, I just have to say, Selena, you’re my ultimate girl crush. I don’t know if I want to be YOU or be WITH YOU. If by some crazy chance, I ever end up becoming rich and famous, let’s disregard this article and be friends, or at least put me on your PR list because I love Rare. Plus, come on, we’re both Cancers, so you know I’m all about those vibes!

social Media breaks

Let’s talk about Selena’s infamous social media “breaks.” I mean, she’s so real for trying, but sometimes she needs to work on keeping it on the down low, you know what I’m saying? Like, she’ll announce a break, but then she’ll be back on Instagram or start liking shady posts like nothing happened. It’s kind of hilarious, but also totally relatable.

But hey, being famous comes with its own set of challenges. Selena’s got all eyes on her every move, so slipping up like that is bound to happen. I guess it just goes to show that even the biggest celebs struggle with staying off their socials sometimes.

And speaking of struggles, have you ever tried to take a social media break, only to find yourself sneaking a peek at your messages and then getting sucked into a scrolling spree? If you haven’t been there, well, you’re probably way more disciplined than the rest of us.

lack of accountability

Selena’s been caught up in some serious heat lately, and honestly, it’s hard to defend her on this one. The TikToks calling out her victim complex? Damn, they hit hard – because there’s some truth to it! She’s got this habit of diving into sensitive topics without always having the best approach.

Take her whole deal with political issues. People call her out for not using her platform to speak up, especially since she claims to be all about philanthropy. And her response? “I’m taking a social media break to avoid the negativity.” But then, she’s back online like nothing happened. It’s a bit tone-deaf, to say the least.

I mean, if she really doesn’t want to get involved, it might be better to just stay quiet instead of making a big show of stepping back and then getting caught in the act anyway. Like, come on, Selena, we see through that. It’s time to keep it real and own up to your actions, instead of continuing this toxic pattern.

Benny Blanco

When it comes to Selena’s love life, it’s time for everyone to zip it and let the girl find her happiness. I mean, she’s been single for five years now, so if she’s found someone who makes her smile, why complain? Sure, some people have their complaints about him, especially since he used to be tight with her ex (no names needed), but come on, let’s give the girl a break.

Now, let’s talk about Benny. That shady post about Hailey Bieber’s phone case? Totally unnecessary drama, if you ask me. It’s like we’re watching a high school romance play out in the lives of 30-year-olds. It’s kind of entertaining, but at the same time, it’s like, “Come on, guys, grow up.”

But seriously, everyone needs to calm down. Sure, Selena’s not exactly keeping her relationship under wraps, but who can blame her? When you’ve got someone who treats you right, you want everyone to know. And let’s keep it real, the only ones complaining about it are the ones flying solo themselves. The rest of us know the deal; when you find a good one, you’re gonna show them off to the world.

let’s talk about the good

When we talk about Selena Gomez, we can’t overlook the incredible impact she’s making. Through Rare Beauty, she hasn’t just introduced an incredible makeup line, but she’s also using her platform and profits to champion better access to mental health resources.

Let’s talk about the Rare Comfort Club. It’s a game-changer, offering FREE virtual meditation and yoga sessions, along with insights into mental health resources and ways to support those around us who might be struggling. It’s like having a support system right at your fingertips.

And here’s the kicker: Selena isn’t just relying on influencers or big brands to spread the word about Rare. Nope, she’s reaching out to local Mental Health Advocates, lifting them up and supporting their efforts to educate and empower their communities. It’s inspiring to see someone use their influence for such a meaningful cause.

As a fellow Mental Health Advocate, I’m all for Rare and the powerful message Selena is sending. It’s more than just makeup — it’s about spreading awareness, support, and making a real difference. Let’s celebrate Selena for being a true force for good.

Despite the highs and lows Selena and I have faced, I believe in the journey we’re on and have faith in her path. When it comes down to it, we’re all just trying to navigate life the best we can. That’s why I’m choosing to extend grace to my girl; after all, it’s her life and her journey.
