Recently, I’ve noticed my TikTok and social media flooded with all kinds of exciting Hunger Games content since the new movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, came out. That got me thinking about grouping the dorms at the University of Scranton into Districts, just like in The Hunger Games. I decided to create a map and figure out which dorm might be in each District, and it’s been a neat adventure exploring the connection between our university and the world of The Hunger Games.
District 1: Montrone & Pilarz Halls
At the University of Scranton, Montrone and Pilarz are like the fancy District 1 in The Hunger Games. They’re the newest dorms at The U and offer cool stuff like a super nice gym, close walk to DeNaples, and multiple dining options nearby. Each apartment in Montrone and Pilarz is for four people, and everyone gets their own bedroom. These buildings also have air conditioning and laundry on each floor. Also, they’re a short walk to the library, with campus police nearby if there’s ever an emergency.
District 2: GLM
Gannon, Lavis, and MacKillop Halls are giving off the vibes of District 2. Being located more centrally on campus, GLM geographically fits the criteria for District 2. Since District 2 is one of the largest communities in Panem, I believe GLM also fits this description, mainly because one in every four freshmen I’ve encountered has told me that they live in GLM. Most importantly, since District 2 is canonically home to the most well-off citizens in Panem, the proximity between Montrone, Pilarz, and GLM makes this parallel too fitting.
District 3: Condron Hall
In The Hunger Games, District 3 is known for being a place where people with a passion for technology, engineering, or computer sciences gather. This led me to believe that Condron Hall fits this description. Condron has several modern amenities, high-tech study spaces, and a collaborative atmosphere for students interested in cutting-edge fields. With all this inspiration and the best wifi connectivity on campus, yup, Condron is District 3.
District 4: Giblin-Kelly Hall
District 4 is known for its association with fishing and the sea. If we were to imagine District 4 at The University of Scranton, it might symbolize a dorm where students who love water activities or environmental studies come together. Gibby K is right across from The Byron Center, where the swimmers and divers attend their practices at the pool. Watch out, you might smell chlorine while walking down the hill!
District 5: Madison Square Apartments
District 5 in The Hunger Games is all about power and electricity. If we think about a District 5 dorm at The University of Scranton, it could be a place where students who like energy, electrical stuff, or caring for the environment hang out. Since these two apartments are closer to downtown and can see the city lights in the sky, we can call it the power and electricity spot!
District 6: Redington Hall
The transportation and manufacturing District goes to Redington Hall. District 6 at The University of Scranton might represent a dorm where students interested in logistics, transportation, or engineering gather. The train passes by Redington and is easy to hear from the building.
District 7: Gavigan Hall
In The Hunger Games, District 7 is associated with the lumber industry and forestry. If we were to envision a District 7 at The University of Scranton, it might symbolize a dorm where students with interests in environmental studies, forestry, or related fields gather. This dorm has a natural and outdoorsy feel, with spaces designed to promote eco-friendly practices or even communal green areas. Right outside of Gav, there is a plot of grass with large steps where students study and enjoy nature activities.
District 8: Romero Plaza Apartments
Imagining a District 8 at The University of Scranton might symbolize a dorm where students interested in fashion, textiles, or design come together. Romero apartment students tend to have their windows open showing each student’s unique style.
District 9: Fitch Hall
In The Hunger Games, District 9 is responsible for grain production. This would represent a dorm where students interested in agriculture, farming, or sustainable food practices gather. This dorm has a down-to-earth and communal vibe. Bushes and flowers in front of Fitch bring in sustainable living.
District 10: Denis Edward Hall
District 10 is associated with livestock and agriculture. Denis Edward is in the middle of all freshman dorms, bringing in all students walking past and heading to class. This makes it an “all-animal space” when students are late to class.
District 11: Nevils Hall
District 11 is known for agriculture, specifically the cultivation of crops. This dorm has a green and communal ambiance, featuring spaces for gardening, discussions on sustainable living, and collaborative projects related to agriculture. In front of Nevils Hall, there is a green area. This green space area showcases several activities in the winter, like sledding, and in the warmer times, studying, sunbathing, and chilling.
District 12: Driscoll Hall
In The Hunger Games, District 12 is characterized by coal mining and is one of the poorer districts. This dorm is one of the less talked about buildings on campus, and in the movie, the Capitol doesn’t need District 12 aside from its coal. This dorm has a simple yet tight-knit atmosphere, fostering a sense of unity and support among residents.
Remember, it’s just a fun comparison every dorm at The U has its unique charm!
