Sometimes, you just need a soothing night in with takeout, skincare, and your girls. If that’s the move, look no further for your night’s entertainment! Maybe you’re tired of the usual rom-com and want to switch it up! I love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 10 Things I Hate About You, and 27 Dresses as much as the next girl, but I’ve also seen them 400 times. The following films are great mysteries and thrillers with shocking plot twists — seriously, you didn’t see these coming.
- Shutter Island
-
This mystery thriller film is directed by Martin Scorsese and based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. It’s worth watching for Leo alone. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a detective sent to a remote island to investigate a patient’s escape. The film details his work, interactions with patients, and personal life. It’s super dark and creepy, but you’ll be on the edge of your seat. As for the ending, you definitely won’t see it coming.Â
Available on Paramount+.
- The Usual Suspects
-
This one is a bit older, released in 1995 and starring Kevin Spacey. The story follows the police investigation of a fire on a boat allegedly carrying cocaine. The police trace the involvement to five common criminals, called “the usual suspects.” Only one of these mysterious men makes it out of the fire, giving him complete control over what the police know. The sole survivor tells the police a story about an elusive criminal who is allegedly responsible for the fire and deaths. Whether or not that story is true … you’ll have to find out for yourself. Also, the last line might be the best in cinematic history (but that’s just my opinion).
Available on Prime (premium subscription), Roku (premium subscription), and Philo.
- The Sixth Sense
-
You’ve probably heard of this, or heard your Dad talk about it. If it hasn’t been spoiled for you yet, you’ve been living under a rock, but it’s still worth a watch. M. Night Shyamalan directs this mystery about a psychiatrist and his child patient who sees ghosts. Some parts are incredibly dark and sad, but it’s iconic in the plot twist genre. The color theory and cinematography make this a classic psycho-thriller.
Available to rent or purchase on Prime, Apple, and Google Play.
- Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
-
There’s a reason this one was nominated for ten Oscars. Quentin Tarantino directs this take on the rise of Hollywood, Charles Manson, and Sharon Tate’s life. The story is shown through the eyes of fictional television star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Rick ends up living next to the movie star Sharon Tate and her husband, Roman Polanski, at the same time Charles Manson’s cult is growing. The clothes are so fun, and the music is excellent. Again, it’s worth watching for Leo and Brad, but it’s also a well-done film. Despite being influenced by a true story, you’ll have to watch to see how Tarantino rewrites history.
Available on Hulu.
That wraps up my top picks for movies with the best plot twists. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your besties, blankets, and snacks, and snuggle in for the cinematic ride of your life!
