With both spring and Easter breaks approaching quickly, I have come to the realization that there really isn’t much time left in my Sophomore year of college. It’s crazy to think that I am almost halfway through my Holy Cross experience, especially since I remember freshman move-in day like it was yesterday. While I have been reflecting on how fast time flies, I have also realized that I have grown immensely as a person throughout my time here so far. I have learned important lessons that I will carry with me not only as I continue college, but life beyond Holy Cross as well, some of which include the following:
Be Yourself
As cheesy as this sounds, it really is important to stay true to who you are in college. It’s a given that you will both attract and gravitate towards the “right” people if you do so. Putting up any sort of a front is exhausting and won’t do you any good in the long run!
Make Connections Right Away
I met one of my best friends and roommate Ann (who is also a fellow Her Campus member!) by introducing myself to her on the first day of fall orientation. If we didn’t talk that day, I’m convinced my college experience as a whole would have played out very differently!
Try Not To Stress About Grades
Your self-worth isn’t determined by your exam grades. You have already made it to the right place and probably spent a lot of time and energy worrying about academics back in high school. You should take your studies seriously, of course, but try not to let them get in the way of your fun.
Take Advantage of Opportunities
Definitely try to join a handful of clubs/extracurriculars early on in your college experience. This is without a doubt one of the best ways to meet fellow students that share the same interests as you.
Go With The Flow (As Much as Possible)
Coming from a chronic overthinker, it can be very hard to sit back and let certain circumstances play out. However, it’s important to recognize that you don’t have full control over every aspect of your life, especially in an ever-changing environment such as college.
Trust The Process/Stick It Out
Everyone adjusts to college at a different pace, and that’s okay! As scary as feeling alone/out of place may be though, one of my biggest pieces of advice is to stay on campus until you have somewhat found your bearings. Going home isn’t going to give you any opportunities to figure things out!
