How to Survive a Syracuse Winter From a Sophomore

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

There is no winter like a Syracuse winter! Attending university in one of the coldest cities in the country can be a struggle, but there are simple ways to get around it, all without sacrificing style for comfort.

Investing in good quality, yet stylish clothes was a must for me when shopping for winter clothes. I didn’t want to wear sweatpants to class every day, but I also wanted to keep warm. I had to learn the hard way to stay comfortable. When shopping for winter jackets, I looked for one that was extra warm inside so I could avoid extra layers for shirts and sweaters. I found my The North Face jacket to be very comfortable and it allowed me to wear what I wanted when I wanted. This jacket was my favorite item to wear all winter and didn’t hinder my outfit.

When it comes to outfits, my go-to was always a chunky sweater and jeans, or a long-sleeve top and flowy pants, whether they were flare leggings or any type of comfy yoga pants. For sweaters, I liked wearing v-necks or 3-quarter zips, as I enjoyed being able to show off my necklaces and have an off-the-shoulder look. When looking for jeans, I made sure to find some that were cropped or easily fit over my shoes, and wouldn’t drag on the ground. The WORST thing to happen is going to class with jeans covered in snow on the bottom!

Accessories are a must when putting together an outfit in the winter! I tend to choose ear muffs over hats, as they do not mess up my hair, and allow for an adorable addition to a winter look. You can easily find sets of ear muffs, gloves, and scarves on Amazon, which are great quality and can keep you warm on your walk to class. The best type of gloves have fingertips that allow you to use your phone with them on, so you don’t have to sacrifice the coldness for a text back! I have found that neutral colors, such as black, grey, or white, can easily match any outfit.

Now you are ready to survive the winter! Adjusting to the cold here can be a challenge, but I can assure you that it gets easier. Winter lasts for most of the semester, even longer than most schools. It is important to be prepared and have the right materials, as this will be the reality for almost the entire school year. Stay safe and stay warm!

I am currently a sophomore at Syracuse University from New York City, and I am studying psychology. I am passionate about journalism and social media, and I enjoy creating content and writing articles, with hopes to become more involved in these fields during my time at Syracuse. On campus, I am involved in Z89 Radio Station and Alpha Xi Delta. Some professional experience I have acquired is working as a summer camp counselor over the past few years at my local summer camp. At this job, I have learned helpful skills such as time management and leadership. Some hobbies include going to the gym, and shopping, but my favorite hobby is cooking/baking. I enjoy trying new recipes as well as discovering new foods. I am very excited to become more involved in Her Campus, and look forward to meeting new people!
