Overconsumption, especially in seasonal attire, is a growing issue due to changing trends and social media influences. Every year, when seasons change, consumers are encouraged to buy newer, trendier items. Consumers are influenced by social media and retailers to buy the newest trends and collections, to only use the item for a short amount of time. The constant cycle of buying new clothes and never using them can lead to waste. Many items are abandoned after one season, contributing to landfills and pollution.

Modern-day thrift shops such as Goodwill are great places to donate clothes or give them to a friend instead of throwing them out or letting it sit in the back of your closet. Social media sends out the message of needing to buy an entire new closet for each trend and season. For example, TikTok shop transferred the app from fun videos to seeing new products almost every time you scroll. Influencers earn commission by telling viewers: “You need to buy this new item from TikTok it’s 50% off.” This can often lead to impulsively buying an item because of sales, which I have fallen victim to myself. Many social media influencers are focusing on selling items to consumers for that commission. For example, Amazon storefronts from influencers of items you “need’ for the upcoming season. These influencers make money when you buy something from their storefront.

The next time you see an ad or hear about a new trend, just tell yourself you most likely won’t use it in six months. It’s fine to purchase new things and treat yourself, but be thoughtful and selective about what you choose.
