Noah Kahan’s release of the song “Stick Season” in July 2022 was huge for New Englanders everywhere. For a girl who has lived her whole life in New England, and the last eight years of it in Vermont, people now have a point of reference to the region. So with the release of the full album later that year, and the subsequent deluxe versions in 2023 and 2024 respectively, there were ten lyrics that warmed every New England kid’s frozen hearts.
- Stick Season: “And I love Vermont, but it’s the season of the sticks”Â
This one is self-explanatory. People finally know what I’m talking about when I say I am from Vermont. Thanks Noah!
- All My Love: “No winter coat could keep out all of cold of your atmosphere”
This one is also easy to understand. New Englanders live and die by their jackets. If someone is so cold your L.L. Bean 850 cannot fix it, you probably should not continue the relationship.Â
- Homesick: “Well I’m tired of dirt road named after high school friends’ grandfathers”
My parents do in fact live on a road named after somebody’s grandfather. This is small town New England at its finest.Â
- Paul Revere: “Vail bought the mountains and nothing was the same”Â
Aside from writing a song about New England’s own Paul Revere, tapping into the hatred of Vail is a pretty sure shot to be relatable content up north.Â
- Forever: “Let’s drive for no reason”
Ask any northern New England high schooler, I will bet that driving around aimlessly with their friends is one of their favorite things to do. Vermont granted us miles of open roads for a reason.Â
- New Perspectives: “The intersection got a Target / Now they’re calling it downtown”Â
I remember the day the first Target opened in Vermont. It was 2018 and my mom wouldn’t take me and my sister on the weekends because it was always too crazy there. Now, it is a staple to the Burlington, VT experience.Â
- No Complaints: “Tried to blame weather”
Every single person in New England has at least once tried to blame being emotional on the weather. We are all just mad that Noah Kahan called us out for it.Â
- Your Needs, My Needs: “Cross that county line”
New England driving often involves quite a lot of distance. Sometimes leaving the county is worth it for a better shopping experience. And sometimes, it puts just enough distance between you and your problems.Â
- You’re Gonna Go Far: “I got tired of the frat boys with their brights on”
Their brights, and their snapback hats, and their khaki shorts.Â
And finally, 10. Northern Attitude: “Forgive my northern attitude, I was raised out in the cold”Â
We were raised with tough New England values, but also Vermont is the 8th coldest state in the U.S.
Honorable Mention, Homesick: “I’m mean because I grew up in New England”
This felt too on the nose.
